Links between Anti-acids and Osteoporosis

0 Recommendations

I would to know more details about a new that I saw on TV linking the medication for reflux treatment GERD Syndrome (reflux) with Osteoporosis. According to my Doctor the investigation was conduted by researchers from some lab, with Nexium. They link Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec, Protomix, Aciphex and others antiacids with osteoporosis. Do any one Knows something about this research with Nexium or any other antiacid drugs? Please, let me know.

I believe the problem is that lowered stomach acidity interferes with the absorption of calcium.

Calcium carbonate is a problem -- calcium citrate not so.

The problem is with the absorption of calcium, as Lucy stated. The medication does not 'cause' osteoporosis, but can/does limit the absorption of calcium. The way around this is to take Calcium Citrate + D. Calcium carbonate does not absorb with the lower stomach acids. Calcium citrate does not require the high level of stomach acids to gain absorption. Additionally, if you are to be put on medication, it will have to be one that doesn't cause additional stomach upsets like Flosamax. I take Miacalcin nasal spray.
