Is walking good exercise?

0 Recommendations

For years I heard that walking was a good weight bearing exercise but recently I've read that it is not intense enough to be effective in dealing w/ osteoporosis. I have oteopenia and in the hip and borderline osteoporosis in the spine. I'd like to find an exercise way to address the spine in particular.

Also, I'm curious what other folks think of the Strong Women program.

Sorry, but the clinical results are not promising. The 2008 study "Meta-analysis of walking for preservation of bone mineral density in postmenopausal women" stated " We conclude that regular walking has no significant effect on preservation of BMD at the spine in postmenopausal women, whilst significant positive effects at femoral neck are evident."

So it may be good for your hips, but if your main concern is the spine then you need a more effective form of exercise.

Thanks for the response. Explains why my hips are in better shape than my spine.

Any suggestions as to what are more effective forms of exercise for the spine?

I know that swimming is not supposed to be effective for osteo tx since it's not weightbearing. But there is muscle pull on the spine when doing the crawl--any positive effect on bone density?

I would think that weight lifting exercises would be more beneficial for the spine. I hope so, cause that's what I am trying to do now for the osteoporosis in my spine.

I'm curious which weight resistance exercises target the lower spine? I know several for upper spine.

Hello Gertie, Sara Meeks (www.sarameekspt.com) has a Re-alignment routine that she has offered free to send via email for community members. Sara also has a book on her site that is very helpful and informative for safe exercise for osteoporosis. for those of us that have experienced trauma breaks, walking is too dangerous. Doc said maybe if I was wrapped in bubble-wrap!
