Hi Woody,
Do you know of a ranking by state of rates of osteoporosis? I live in the Pacific Northwet (pun intended) and we have the highest rate of MS in the nation--credited to our gray skies and lack of Vitamin Sunshine. I would be curious to hear how Washington rates compared to the Sunny South.
Thanks,
Susan
Dear SequoiaHealth:
Thanks for sharing this excellent web address http://uvadvantage.org/ with us. I was most impressed by the Creighton University Study provided by your uvadvantage website http://www.uvadvantage.org/portals/0/pdf/CreightonUvitaminD.pdf in which the group of people who swallowed daily a pill containing 1,100 IU of vitamin D3 had a 60% to 77% lower cancer rate after only 4 years when compared against the control group of people who didn't receive any supplemental vitamin D3. I was encouraged by the fact that sunshine was not needed to receive this cancer-preventing benefit of vitamin D. Forty years ago, when I was 10 years old, I enjoyed pointing my "Black Light" (UV lamp) at my large collection of fluorescent and/or phosphorescent rocks and minerals. The manufacturer told me that although the long wave UV lamp was relatively safe, I was warned to never look directly into the short wave UV lamp because it would permanently damage my eyes. Here's a "uv-disadvantage" web address that I forgot to include in my reply to Becka's discussion on vitamin D and calcium http://www.inspire.com/groups/national-osteoporosis-foundation/discussion/p rescription-for-vitamin-d-and-calcium/ in which UV dose determines your risk of developing skin cancer: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15598755?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem 2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DiscoveryPanel.Pubmed_Discovery _RA&linkpos=3&log$=relatedarticles&logdbfrom=pubmed
Hi Susan:
There is very little on this subject. I saw one reference and the osteoporosis pattern was not the same as MS. Actually California had one of the highest rates. Also has one of the highest population centers as well.
