I attended the International Anti-Aging Conference this weekend. There was talk of using hormone replacement therapy (including growth hormone) to help treat osteoporosis. Has anyone tried this?

Hi Jacqueline: I have some acquaintances in Canada that are taking HGH. I don't have any personal experience, but those using it have a lot of positive things to say. The only problem, is most of the pluses that are mentioned are the cosmetic and strength related bonuses they've had. You could trying looking up HGH and see what you find. One fellow mentioned how he went from completely gray hair to dark black, like he had in his younger years, and what it's doing for his energy level, to the point his wife can't keep up with him anymore :).
I don't know how it works on bone, or if it's approved for osteo in the US. Do you know?
Did you find out anything else at this conference? I know some people that are taking estrogen replacement and have done well on it, I guess it just depends on your particular body response. I took HRT for a little over a year and my scores did improve but *who* knows what did it-could have been the Forteo. I had to stop taking it because I'm fibrocystic, and I was growing too many new cysts, both breast and ovarian. We know what hormones do for our bones, so I guess it just depends on what you would like to try to increase bmd. Since I also have heart probs, my dr said I had to stop it, and also because it was causing my NTx to go down on Forteo, so *according to her*, the estrogen was having a blunting effect on Forteo, so I stopped it.
At least they have the low dose HRT to offer know since the WHI (Womens Health Initiative) put the kabosh (sp?) on premarin and prempro at the strengths that were being studied. Who knows maybe the recommendations on this will change once again, just like all the other treatments. One day some things are beneficial, and then a couple of years later they aren't :( It's impossible to keep up with all the varying recommendations.
Hope you enjoyed the conference, lucky you for, you were able to go!!!
Hi Jacqueline,
My endocrinologist - who specialises in osteoporosis - told me that HRT (estrogen) does increase bone density - initially for a few months - then no more and the amount is only about 2% or 3%. My bone density is -4.9 and I need to increase it by 20% - the only thing on the market that comes close is Forteo....
which Ive been on for 3 months now. I believe that fosamax works quite well after a course of Forteo.
regards Aida
