Fosteum Questions

0 Recommendations

There is a new treatment for osteopenia and osteoperosis called Fosteum. You can see several comments on this webpage. The webpage www.fosteum.com is a great resource for information. I have done some research on Fosteum so if you have any questions I will try to help answer and resolve any concerns. As far as I'm concerned this seems to be a solid product with a great safety profile.

I took fosteun for 8 days..it made me nauseas..sick to my stomach..i had such hope that this drug would work for me. at first, the nausea cames in waves and it wasnt too bad, but the last day i was really sick. i also have stomach problems..i take sythroid , nexuim and librax..someone said since this is a soy based drug that it may interfere with thyriod,, i wanted to keep taking it to see if i could adjust to it, but just couldnt do it at this time..

I'm still taking strontium citrate, as I can't get strontium ranelate. The studies for Strontium ralelate were really good (Fosteun doesn't give any indication of studies--who, how many, for how long) so I'm taking a chance that strontium citrate is related. My doctors, who take opposite views on whether I should be taking anything at all, both are opposed to my taking strontium citrate, but I have no side effects and I am happier taking something 'natural' than chemical. Terrible to have to experiment this way, but it seems the whole area is one of experimentation. I wonder if Fosteun is just another "Natural" supplement like "Strontium Support"? Although at least if it's prescribed, one might get some financial help. Good luck! I would ask the company that puts it out what the research is on it---how long it's been studied, etc.

Lulubell - I am sorry it didn't work out for you. It just goes to show that some treatments aren't for everyone. Good luck.

Triena - The soy product in Fosteum is called Genestein. It is the most researched soy product. Just google it and you will find many studies. The reps who "push" Fosteum use 2 studies. One was from 2002 by Morabito et. al. and it is a head-to-head study with HRT with Fosteum coming out ahead. The other study came out last year by Marini et. al. and is a comparison between Genestein and calcium and vitamin D. Again, genestein (Fosteum) comes out ahead. Take some time to do some research like I have and you will feel more comfortable with taking a more "natural" approach.

hi Triena,
i too am taking strontium citrate...for about 1 month now. i was wondering how long you were taking it and if you had an improvement in your bone density test. i have'nt researched fosteum as of yet. the studies i looked out for strontium were all very positive with regards to repletion of bone mass. thanks linda ny

Beware of Fosteum if you have any type of auto immune disease, fibromyalgia, thyroid disease, IBS or arthritis like I do. It is very high in Omega 6 which can trigger imflammation, boy did two weeks of this supplement cause me problems. Extreme flare up, hot flashes, there should be a warning about this. I am going to send this info to the company and FDA. Too bad I could not take this, I would hate for others with these problems to take this Drug/Supplement, it has been a nightmare.

You must be confusing this with another product because it doesn't contain Omega 6 fatty acids. Check the label to see if it had a similar name. Where did you get it?

Fosteum contains "Genistein aglycone a natural substance derived from soy and in concentrated amounts. This ingredient like soy (which is from the omega 6 family not omega 3 family) can increase inflammatory prostaglandins by which omega 3 fatty acids lead to decreases. Eating foods very high in omega 6 fatty acids increase and amplify inflammation. I do not have this product confused with something else. It was prescribed for me and filled at the pharmacy, it is Fosteum. In education and acquired knowledge we can help ourselves.

Hi everybody!
I'm new to all this and have less than a week of knowing that my left hip is in bad shape. My doctor wanted me to go on medication immediately, but I'd rather try more natural options first, and as I'm sure most of you have done, I've been researching like a lunatic.
I like what I have found re the Fosteum, but is it only for osteopenia or can it be used for osteoporosis? My score was -2.7, and to me that's "only" .2 in terms of the difference between the two conditions.
I'm very happy I've found you all...I've been reading a lot, and for that I thank you all!

Thank you for sharing this. I have fibromyalgia, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and arthritis. I will remember not to try Fosteum. I cannot take echinacea either when I am ill because of the thyroiditis. It causes my body to destroy my thyroid even faster.

thanks everyone for sharing....i took fosteum for 8 days..i had such a positive attitude..well, nevermind the fact that i take thyriod pills, i have ibs caused by stress and take librax 2x day..by the 8th day, i was so sick to my stomach, i had to stop. couldnt take actonel or fozamax either and was afraid of boniva,,,so i just keep taking my calcium citrate w/d and mag and hope for the best..i just dont know...

Hi Lulubell...sorry to hear the foosteum didn't work for you...it sounds so good. Were you using it for ostopenia or full blown osteoporosis?
I hope something comes your way soon. Take care...

Hi Joanne, unfortuatley, osteoporosis...

I have experienced the echinacea reaction also. It has been know in Germany for may years that echinacea can cause flares of autoimmune disease. In Europe there is a warning label on echinacea not to take if you have autoimmune disease. Wish the FDA and our Govt. would be so inspired. (No money in it for them) There is a very good article by Michelle Petri, M.D., MPH with John Hopkins Arthritis Center http:/www.hopkins-arthritis.org/arthritis-info/lupus/ discussing this and other issues. Thanks for posting the echinacea response on the web to educate others. Have a great day!

Hi, everyone!
I don't know anything about Fosteum, except what I read in this group. I do know about strontium citrate, which Triena and linnyd531 are taking. I have been taking 680 mg strontium citrate daily since January 21, 2008. I take it before bedtime so it will not interfere with calcium in food or supplements.

I would encourage lulubell to consider adding strontium citrate to her regimen of calcium citrate with vitamin D and magnesium, just not at the same time of the day.

Jo-Ann should also consider strontium citrate as a natural option. I hope her left hip improves. Physical therapy might help, also.

I want to invite all of you to my blog at http://strontiumforbones.blogspot.com/. It offers current information about strontium, an extensive link library for more info, and a chance to post comments and questions.

Hi everybody...what a wonderful group to have stumbled onto! I'm certainly going to go looking for strontium citrate as all the reviews are very good. I'm just not sure where to go to get it - certainly the local drug store doesn't have any!
I came across this website earlier today, and found it very interesting, so I thought I'd share it.

Sorry I don't know how to add a link.

oh...it adds the link automatically! How nice! :-)

Thank you Badbones for your comment on fosteum and autoimmune disease. I had also read years ago about echinacea being bad for those w/autoimmune disease

when i wake up i take my thryoid pill..wait a hour and take my nexium pill...wait a hour and take my librax(IBS) pill....then with lunch i take my calcium and also take the calcium again with dinner.before bed i take my blood pressure pill..so, when would i take the strontiun and what brand do you think is best? thank you so much,,

Hi, Lulubell and Jo-Ann,

I would take the strontium before bed. I take mine about one hour before bedtime because I don't like to drink a glass of water any closer to bedtime than that. It should be OK to take with a blood pressure pill. The only interaction I know of is calcium and strontium; these should not be taken together.

Strontium citrate can be purchased at local health food stores, such as Chamberlin's. It can also be purchased from on-line vitamin/supplement distributors, such as vitasprings.com.

I buy from vitasprings because they are reliable and offer excellent sales prices. I purchase the Doctor's Best brand called Strontium Bone Maker, 340 mg/120 veggie caps. I take two a day to equal 680 mg, the recommended dose.

You might want to buy a smaller bottle of 60 caps to try it out the first time, as I did, but you get better pricing on the larger bottle, especially if you buy several at one time, as I do now. Plus, you save on postage with larger orders.

I have been taking strontium citrate for six and a half months and I feel well. I had some minor constipation when I first started taking it, but, after increasing the fiber in my cereal, the problem disappeared.

I hope it works for both of you. If you want to read more information, visit my blog at http://strontiumforbones.blogspot.com/
