I just learned that there is a new medication for ostepenia called Fosteum. I plan to go to
http://www.fosteum.com/ and read about it. I don't
know anything about it yet.

Hi Poet Lady: This looks interesting. It's a medical food, with soy, D3, zinc, calcium and magnesium. I'm already on another med, but if you find out anymore on it, like how it works, or if you know anyone taking it, let us know what they think about it. It say's you can't take it if you've ever had breast cancer, or if you're on HRT or SERMS (what I'm taking).
I didn't read the whole page, but wondered why you need a rx for it?
Thanks
Hi Windblown,
To answer your question about the Rx requirement, it's because the product is classified by the FDA as a Medical Food. This means it is intended for management of a particular disease and thus the patient should be under the care of a physician.
I've been on it since it came out and I'm waiting for my follow-up DXA results. I'll let you know how they turn out.
Hi Duranee: Good luck with the dxa!!! Thanks for the answer on medical food. I once took a med that was classified that way for arthritis, but I stopped taking it because my insurance wouldn't pay for it and it was very expensive.
I hope this fosteum works well for you...
Hi Duranee,
How long have you been taking Fosteum? Why did you decide on this medication as opposed to something else?
Hi Poet-Lady,
I have been taking it for just over a year. I don't like the potential side effects of the other products. Fosteum can cause side effects - anything can - but they seem to be more benign. Fortunately, I have had no side effects at all. I take it with or without food and it causes no problem either way. I'm just eager to see what has happened to my bone. I plan to call the doctor tomorrow to get the results.
Hi Duranee,
I hope your results were positive. Are you going to continue taking the Fosteum? Do you have osteopenia or osteoporosis? Thank-you for the information that you have given me.
Hi Poet-Lady,
I got my results and I am definitely going to keep taking Fosteum. I went from osteopenic at the hip (about -1.5) to a positive 0.5. I gained at the lumbar spine as well, moving to a 0, which is equivalent to the norm for a healthy 30 year old. My Z-scores, which are age and gender matched, are 1.5 and 1.6. That is very good, and I am thrilled. I have been religious about taking Fosteum. I probably haven't missed 10 doses all year, but it's easy to take since there's no restrictions about food or drink.
hi duranee 1..i called my dr.and he called me in a prescription for this fosteum..i have osteo.i am excited about this because you had good results, yet scared at the same time because i always worry about side effects and am taking alot of other meds, thyroid, nexium, librax(for ibs)and blood pressure meds at night..and of course calcium with vit d and mag,,,waiting to see if my insurance will cover this..please continue to share your experience and hope..how do you take this..2xtimes a day?
Well, I hope it works as well for you as it has for me. I take quite a few other meds as well and have had no problem. I take it in the morning with my coffee and sometime at night between dinner and bed, whenever I happen to think of it. Let me know how you do on it, please.
I forgot. Check out the website www.fosteum.com. They offer a discount card if your insurance doesn't cover it.
I checked with my prescription plan and it does NOT cover Fosteum. I am considering taking this medication since it doesn't have the side effects of Fosamax. I am
going to talk to both my doctors first before I decide.
hi duranee1 just picked up my prescription for the fosteum...do you have to take it along with calcium and vit d..or can you take it alone..i know this sounds ridiculious but the medical insert was not with the prescription and the pharamasist didnt know much more than i do..i start the day with 3 different pills so i usually take my calcium with lunch and then dinner but i know these pills are 12 hrs apart..im happy you go good results..thanks
Hi Lulubell,
No, they don't have to be taken at the same time. I take my calcium during the day, usually after lunch, as well as a good bit in my diet. If you don't want to take the Fosteum in the am with the other pills, you could take it at lunch and before bed. I'm not too picky about the 12 hours exactly. I take it in the morning and sometime between dinner and bed.
Hope you have a great DXA next year. :)
