Fosamax and Heartburn/Acid Reflux?

0 Recommendations

Following 5 yrs. on Fosamax, I have developed persistent heartburn. My internist is convinced it is caused by the Fosamax, and says that 4 of every 10 women he treats who take Fosamax develop Heartburn symptoms. I've been off the Fosamax for 2 weeks now, and the symptoms persist.

Has anyone else developed Heartburn or Acid Reflux from taking Fosamax, and if so, how long did it take for it to go away (assuming you stopped your Fosamax)? Thanks!

Yes, I took didronel [which is similar to fosamax] and yes, I did have problems with it..I had mild heartburn at times before I took it..while taking it I got such terrible stomach pains and so much reflux I had to stop halfway through. I tried it a year later with the same results [finally got smart and refused to take it] . I have Gerd so bad now that even 2 40 mil Nexium a day and 2 Randitine at bedtime only partially control it. In the meantime, all of the Nexium has shut off the acid in my stomach so for the last several years, my Calcium did not absorb. Now I have osteopororsis and am taking Calcium Citrate and extra Vit D but that will not help me regain the bone I have lost.

I don't think the didronel was too blame for the permanent Gerd but it took awhile for my stomach to recover both times I took it, at that time I used Prilosec and it seems as though it was a month or more before I felt better.

Hang in there..you will be OK eventually.

I had GERD and was on Zantac before I started Fosamax. I started it when it was a daily pill and did have mild heartburn daily. I switched to the weekly pill when it came out and only had mild heartburn the day I took it. I switched to Nexium when Zantac went OTC because it was no longer working for me. A couple of years ago I switched to Fosamax +D and have had no heartburn from it. I still take Nexium for other reasons though.

I've had GERD for15 years and have treated it with Prevacid. My GI Dr recommended tx by a qualified osteoporosis agency. Certain calciums are not absorbed because of the reduced acid so I am now on Citrical. I was treated with Reclast IV in March. All is going well so far other than adjustments in my calcium and vit D intake.
