I have been taking Forteo for 6 weeks. My bones and joints ache and I am always tired. Anyone else experiencing this on Forteo? I would very much like to know wether there are kindred spirits out there - the pain, especially in my hands a nd feet, is severe.
My doctor is discontinuing me for 2 weeks. I was so excited about this new drug and now I don't know.

FORTEO:
I see that Eli Lilly has been working about 1 1/5 years thus far on coming out with a PATCH for Forteo.

I felt aches & pains for my 1st couple of months on Forteo. I thought of it as growing pains, as new bone mass was being made to strengthen my existing bone. That I could deal with. Stay with it!!!!

Thank you for sharing. A patch would be wonderful.

I have been hoping that's it---the equivelant of growing pains. My doctor wants to rule out anything else.
I really want to resume the Forteo---but oh, the pain right now.

I have been on forteo for almost 5 months. I have had lots of aches and pains and also a lot of other side effects. I now look at the aches and pains like( liliane )as growing pains. The longer I am on it the less aches and pains I have. My co workers and family members seem to notice that I am stronger physically. I still have some side effects which we are dealing with.....but I would recommend forteo....I believe it is working.

I also have had a lot of aches and pains, and even was unable to use my wrists because the pain was so bad. I was off it for a few months, everything cleared up and we are trying it again. Has anyone ever tried it every other day? I am very sensitive to medicine, and have not had good luck with other drugs, and wondering if that might work.

Thank you for the encouragement. That's what I need to hear.

I had some joint pains, particularly in the wrist at first but it is very infrequent now. I think that a rapid heartbeat is happening more often than it did before I began the medication. I have taken it for 7 months. I would really be interested in knowing how patients in Europe who took it several years ago are doing at this point: if there was improvement did it last after being off Forteo for a long time.

I like your idea, of trying every other day. I too am very sensitive to drugs. I was thinking same thing and will suggest to my MD.

I will be interested to see what your MD says. I am waiting to see how I tolerate it this time.. last time I only stayed on it for almost 4 months. Good luck

I will definatelly stay in touch. We need all the info possible.

It seems to me that if your side effects do not become more severe then it would be a good thing to continue. For me, the side effects kept getting worse to the point it was interfering significantly with my life. So, I think the key is to take the med unless the side effects become increasingly severe. I don't regret the time that I took Forteo (1-3/4 years) and I wish I could have finished the 2 years. For me, unfortunately, it was more than just the aches/pains of "growing pains".

Liliane,
I also am on Forteo, Just finishing my 3rd month. I too am experiencing aches and pains. Mostly in my joints, hips, lower back and now knees. I am now taking over the counter arthritis medicine and that seems to ease it. I too am trying to hang in there. Hopefully this will get better!

Thanks for sharing. I will try taking arthritis meds. Didn't.

actually, the side effects were very severe. I could hardly move, and very tired and very weak.
Lili

I took Forteo for 1 year without any side effects.
Unfortunately it did not help either und it was a waste of money.

Amazing. The possiblity remains that what I am experiencing are not side affects but something else not related to the Forteo.

I took Forteo in 2004 thru 2007 (for some reason they let me stay on it for 3 years). I had a wonderful response to these little shots! I don't remember enough pain that I thought about stopping the medicine. I actually began to think that the Forteo was helping with the pain. I cannot take the oral meds due to stomach problems and did try the Reclast in July of 2008. I was due to have it again but chose not to because of the strange side effects I had. My GYN doctor and I are now in the process of trying to get Eli Lilly to help me get back on the program. I have severe osteoporosis and made wonderful steps toward building new bone per the bone tests I've had done since. Hope this has helped some of you decide to keep these little shots up (yes, a patch would be good).

I began taking Foreo in March. Almost immediately I felt "not well." Sharp, stabbing pains in my shins, abdomen, back pain, chest pain. I complained to my dr. - who was not a endocrinologist, just some guy I found in the phone book after I "fired" my primary dr. for lack of interest. He laughed in my face and told me the pain was not related to the Forteo. Oh, I forgot to mention about a month after I started, I developed a numbness in my face (nose, chin, left side if face, forehead) and my teeth felt "funky." He said none of this was related to the Forteo. Said I have osteoarthritis. I told him, then I got it overnight. I fired him, too. Drs. should not laugh in their patients faces.

My new primary care dr. sent me for P.T. for my recently diagnosed degenerative discs in my neck and the numbness. After about 6 weeks of treatment, it was almost gone - completely gone by August. I now occasionally feel slight numbness in my chin.

I found a endo in another town (Pittsburgh) who specializes in osteoporosis. She listened to my concerns and said she didn't think they were related to the drug, but she LISTENED to me. She also suggested taking me off the drug for a week. Within 48 hours I felt 100% better - my old self. But, we discussed Forteo was the best treatment for me. She said if I could tolerate these symptoms, I should try to continue with Forteo. I went back on and, amazingly, I don't feel the same as I did initially. I have an occasional pain in my shins and no pain in my abdomen. I don't know what to think. I still am not comfortable taking this drug, but I don't know what else to do. I tried everything else (diet, exercise, calcium, etc - I have done those things since I was in my 20').

Just thought I'd share. Maybe someone else can tell me if they experienced the same things.

J

I think you should continue with Forteo. I now take it every other day and my symptoms are much less. Also, I don't have any of your symtoms----still joint and bone pain. But much less now. I also feel stronger.
