Hi,
Please tell me about your experience with Evista.
Thanks!

My endocrinologist told me (as well as my internist) that it was a MUST for someone with osteo problems. It is not similar to hormone replacements in drugs that were the cause of suspicious problems for cancer. I've been taking it for about 9 years now.

Your doctors had you on Evista and Fosamax or Forteo at the same time?

Yes. I was on EVISTA, first with Fosamax (where I seemed to be in the 10% of people who did NOT respond over about a 6 year period.)

then I took the Evista with the Forteo. Now I am back on the Evista with the Fosamax since that is the protocol after you finish the 2 years with Forteo.

Hope this helps.

Hi speshellkay: I took Forteo for 2 year, with no other med, because my Dr say's that if you take HRT, or a SERM, or Bisphosphonate with Forteo it will reduce the effect of the Forteo. HRT, SERMS, Calcitonin and BP's (fosamax, actonel, boniva et al) are all antiresorptives Forteo is an anabolic. There are plenty of research articles on the protocol of taking Forteo with other meds and then there are just as many that say it's not a good idea, so you will have to decide for yourself.

Of course all Dr.s have their own opinion but on the topic of combining Forteo with other meds is definitely split down the middle. Read the link below that will explain it better. If you are only interested in Evista then the Forteo link probably won't interest you, but it is very informative on how all these meds work not just Forteo-Evista is included in it.

If you want to know more about combining Forteo with other bone meds, look up "combo therapies with teriparatide."

I haven't had any side effects from Evista , but I do have ovarian and breast cysts, so maybe taking Evista will reduce my risk of invasive breast cancer, which is what this drug may do according to the manufacturer/studies. Evista does not prevent cancer.
I don't have a history of blood clots even though I have a bleeding disorder, so that is the main possible side effect. Blood clots can cause strokes so that's mentioned in the side effects of Evista. If you are going to have surgery where you will be in bed for a long period you are told to stop taking Evista. The same thing goes for long air line trips, stop the Evista and restart after the flight. This is also in the insert that you should ask for when you get it filled-if you do.

Good luck..

Forteo link, excellent article on osteoporosis and all meds used for it's treatment.
