endocrinologist vs. rheumatologist

0 Recommendations

I want to go to a doctor that knows more about osteoporosis than the primary care doctors or gynocolgists I have gone to since my diagnosis 5 years ago. I am having a hard time deciding to see an endocrinologist or a rheumatologist. There are very few endocrinologists in the Sacramento, Ca. area and non specialize in osteoporosis. Any thoughts about chosing a specialist for this?

Cher1: Somewhere on this site, Dr. James Webb published a link to a national database of physicians specializing in osteoporosis. I'm not sure precisely where that is, but I'll try to find it and re-post it. And may I ask that others look for it, too?

I went to a rheumatologist in an "Osteoporosis Center" in Livingston, NJ, & all she wanted to do was give me a prescription. She told me horror stories about how women cracked spine bones while doing something simple, like lifting a window to open it. She would not look at the exercises I found or look at my diet - she did send me for some lab work, but didn't make any diet changes. It was a big disappointment.
So, I am just saying that even if someone specializes in Osteo., they might not be the person for you. You might have to talk to a few different doctors & Nutritionists - something a Dr. of Integrative Medicine might be able to help with. That's where I got some help.
No broken bones, yet & it's been over a year since I saw the rheumatologist.
I couldn't find the list from Dr. James Webb, but I would be interested in it, too.
Good luck.

millie123, please check www.nof.org - sidebar "Find a Doctor". Place any state in the Search on "Find a Doctor" and a listing of doctors for the area will come up. Hope this helps. Sandi

Yes, it did help, Sandi. I believe Dr. Webb gave still another link, but at least this gives her a place to start.

Unfortunately, none of the doctors are in the Sacramento area. I just joined Kaiser and will see their endocrinologist in a few weeks.
