core arobics exercise

0 Recommendations

hi all....

please don't hit me with anything but I have been using a couple of excersice dvds that I would like some comments on. It is only this past week that I am re checking everything I do to be sure it works towards my bone health.

I had about 2 months ago bought the dance exercise dvd called core rhythms...it is a stand up exercise routine and while it is fun to do I am wondering if exercise for the abs and core muscels is a good thing to do. I also bought about 6 months ago the stand up leg machine...it works by your feet and legs pushing towards each other in a standing position..this also works the legs and hip area.

I bought both of these for some cardio benefits then found out that I have osteopenia...wondeing if I should continue with these...I have had no bad effects from them yet but want to do exercises that build bone...I love to walk and am working that into my life.

thanks in advance for your comments

Christine

Hi,

The National Osteoporosis Foundation has an exercise video for sale, on its web site. I found the video at the
library. I checked it out and viewed it. It explains which
exercises to avoid. I didn't want to buy it without
viewing it first. If your library system doesn't have it,
they might be able to find it for you in a neighboring
library system.

I have just started to use it.

There would be no way to judge an exercise DVD without viewing it. I have yet to find one that is totally safe, has good directions, and works the muscles and areas that need strengthening the most--the back and hips.
The best thing to do for exercise for osteoporosis is to seek out a professional who is knowledgeable about the condition. This is not easy as any P.T. or exercise trainer will tell you that they work with people with osteoporosis but it doesn't mean they know what they are doing nor does it mean they have a program.
Also, many exercise routines say they work the "core" when they actually don't work core muscles at all.
So far, the safest DVD I've seen is the one from NOF.
