Cod Liver Oil capsules - best brands, what to look for?

After reading "Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox", I have decided to add cod liver oil capsules (for the vitamin A, retinol form) to my growing list of supplements. My multi-vitamin has vitamin A in it but in the carotene form.

What do you think are the best brands of cod liver oil capsules or softgels? How much in international units of retinol should I be looking for? Other considerations?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Ooops, sorry, I should have checked it.... no final 's'

I used to take cod liver oil capsules and then reports started to emerge that too much vitamin A was bad for bones and so I dropped it. http://www.niams.nih.gov/Health_Info/Bone/Bone_Health/Nutrition/vitamin_a.a sp
I find so much to do with supplements contradictory and confusing that I try to get what I need from diet alone. The only vitamin I take is D3 and sometimes have my doubts about that too....

Brightcloud--What did the book say about cod liver oil?

The book "Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox" goes through all the warnings about Vitamin A and explains why they are incorrect. It has a great chapter about the way Vitamins A, D, and K2 work together. I was convinced, and began taking Vitamin A as retinol. My plan is to buy fermented cod liver oil as soon as my Carlson's runs out.

Here is the cod liver oil page from the Weston A. Price website: http://www.westonaprice.org/cod-liver-oil

Spunkyblondie,

The info. in the Calcium Paradox book seems well researched. It is in Chapter 7 (Vitamins K2, A and D: Better Together). I like that the author provides bibliographic notes so one can check the original sources of info. It convinced me enough that I want to try cod liver oil. I had always heard that vitamin A in the retinol form was not the preferred kind. That one was much better off taking beta-carotene that would be transformed into vitamin A by the body. So for many years I have been relying on my multi-vitamin which has beta-carotene only, no "real" vitamin A. I want to try the cod liver oil to see if my body will notice the difference. Perhaps it is my "missing" link?

I went to an osteoporosis seminar today sponsored by a major hospital system. I asked about vitamin K2. Interestingly, neither the endocrinologist (who specializes in osteoporosis) nor the registered dietician knew anything at all about K2. They asked me what I knew!!!

brightcloud,
Why I'm I not surprised The hospital you went to did not know anything about K2 (K2 Mk4)...!!!
We do have to be proactive about our Osteoporosis, and our general health, that is why we are here..

I have learned and my Dr. has learned so much from this group, what I email him lol..

Well, shame on them! But, congrats to you. Hopefully they will be curious about k2 and research that. Maybe YOU should give the seminar next time! :)
