calcium : magnesium ratio ???

0 Recommendations

I was looking on-line to order a calcium magnesium combo. I thought the ratio was 2 : 1 cal to mag. I just stumbled upon the University of Arizona calcium supplement guidelines. In it is says that according to the national academy of science, the safe upper limit of magnesium is no more than 350 mg per day. It also says the elemental calcium from calcium citrate =21%, from carbonate=40%. With 1500 mg calcium citrate, we only absorb 315mg ? Is this correct ? Any advice on choosing supplements would be greatly appreciated! Sorry to be so confusing but I am confused . Maybe I have been reading too much. The Dr. told my husband to throw out the computer !

Mary,

I think your doc sounds a bit arrogant. Keep the computer, and keep visiting us here. In my first year, I didn't see any specialist. My GP was rather clueless, and without this site, I wouldn't have learned anything!

Speaking of specialists, have you seen one yet? You should be seen by either an endocrinologist or a rheumatologist. Ideally, this doctor should be trained in osteoporosis treatment. The first rheumatologist I saw was helpful with the supplements. She calculated how much Calcium I should take, based on how much I got in multi-vit and food. I was taking too much based on my GP's advice.

I'll let the others comment on the ratio's and quantities. There are other ones you may want to consider. Definitely you should add Vitamin-D3, and a blood test may be in order to see what your level is currently. Some women seem to be quite low and so you may need larger doses of D3. Good luck,

Tom
