drinking caffine is not good for bone health but is decafinated coffee an acceptable alternative?

Hello NOF!! Could you give us a guesstimate of how much caffine to take in each day? I use Folgers I think, one half decaf and one half caffeine (sp) and its 30 mg of caffeine. I have one each day and I stay away from soda's........and carbonation....every once in awhile I will have a soda.........I hope we can get answers to what would be safe each day.....also remember some meds have caffeine in them too. Please forgive my spelling today........Victoria

I thought I read on this site that carbonation plays no role in osteoporosis. I'm interested too Southernlady on how much caffene is ok per day. It's kindof subjective I'm sure since coffee is made in different strengths.CAJ

If you do a search for "Caffeine" you will see a post from the NOF staff. That is where you read carbonation is not the problem. It also addressed the issue of caffeine intake. I tried to bump up the message but was unable to do so.

Hi All: I recently had to decrease caffeine, and wanted to mention that some decaf drinks have some caffeine in them, the amount varies by product. Even decaf coffee has some measurable amount of caffeine. I looked at the decaf soda I drink, and caffeine isn't listed on the label, but the decaf coffee I drink has some. Just check the label if you need to completely stop caffeine. I've done this for heart reasons and not for osteo. I just had a cardiolite stress test and for the test you have to stop all caffeine; on the Dr.'s instructions for the fasting portion of the test, they list "Caffeine includes regular/decaf coffee, tea, chocolate and some sodas."

Just thought I would clarify that some decaf drinks have *some* caffeine in them.

Caffeine is sneaky - it's in many processed, or ready-to-eat, or fast-food type items. So what's the big deal about getting off caffeine? There are all kinds of alternatives - Teccino herbal coffee, for one - I drink it every morning and do not miss caffeine jolt at all. When your brain comprehends that something - anything - is "bad for you," why pick it up again? Our basic food supply (on all levels) is so tainted or adulterated, the best thing you can do for your bones is read every label and keep doing your research, otherwise you are CHOOSING to add the damage when you use caffeine.

Ooouuuggg coffee and diet coke....makes my blood curl..don't mean to insult anyone but my bones and myself in general are Soooooo much healthier with out them and I din't miss the buzz. But i know I would miss my bones.

I do read labels but have only seen cafine in coffe, tea, chocolate and sodas diet and regular.

By the way I do drink decafe coffee..whole foods has decafe coffee (excellent taste) that has only one percent caffine a major difference form regular coffee.

I've cut down straight coffee to one mug per day. The rest of the day I drink green tea which I thought healthwise was relly good (flavenoids and all that).
Today I found out it contains nearly as much caffeine as coffee so I've very likely been overdosing. Weird really the chinese drink loads of this stuff and I think I read that they have one of the lowest incidence of osteoporosis in the world.

Does it come in decaffinated cause I know that I have read that green tea is the drink for Osteo.

Yes, it does come in decaf, I switched to that and it tastes great.

I actually take one mug of coffee also to get me to work (safely). Then it's green tea all day at work. Now my understanding was that caffeine decreases our absorption of calcium, and that we could offset this effect by just taking more calcium. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here.

To the best of my knowledge caffine pulls calcium from the bones...same effect as not being able to absorb....I think you are right in that you can take more calcium to replace what the caffine is doing but how much calcium.

I do not see any information on what is a guesstimate of how much caffine is safe........at least give us some number..........I don't get? Help!!!!

This caffeine issue is very confusing. I have read it is bad, I have read you can compensate if you take more calcium, I have read green tea is good even with caffeine and I have heard that it's the coffee decaf or caf that is bad. One thing I noted is that on the FRAX website, the site that uses math to determine fracture risk, they ask the participant a few questions. Two of them are as I remember about smoking and alcohol consumption. There is no question about caffeine consumption. That has to be significant. Personally, however I think it may still be a risk for some under stress because all coffee I think raises cortisol levels even higher. Cortisol is the stress hormone and stress can be a problem for bones. I think the problem is with coffee in general because when in the past I drank only green tea I got the fat on my stomach to go away and that fat is caused in large part by cortisol. Gloucester

Southernlady, if you type Caffeine in the search box you will find a post from NOF about caffeine consumption. Perhaps one of the moderators can bump it up since this has come up again. Betty

I am a traumatic brain injury survivor.....I keep looking up caffeine in search and only see replys. For Earths sake I only want to know what is considered a safe amount of caffeine each day??????? Can anyone just answer this? This is one reason I don't like talking on this board. I am not mad at anyone....it is just when I used to ask a lot of questions they did not get answered.....and right now I still don't know. Sorry I am frustrated right now.

from what I have read...no more than 300mg a day...that is about one 8oz cup of coffee.
