Bioidentical hormones

0 Recommendations

I am 61... I was on Fosamax for over 8 years...no growth but things stayed sort of the same. Then I had a couple of fractures and the DR suggest Forteo. I did it for 18 months and had a loss of 2% !!! Needless to say I am not taking that anymore.
I am checking out everything I can find. BioIdentical
Hormones have been suggested to me but by the local health store person. She seems to have a lot of knowledge about the subject....BUT... has anyone on this list had luck with the hormones... Remember I am over 60...
Suggestions please....
Thanks
Victoria

PS Forgot to mention I live in Mexico.

Hi VictoriaLynn:
I would check Dr. Lee's site. He was the foremost authority on hormone replacement. His work was continued by Christine Northrup. His site is

45 was too young for the multiple symptoms of hormone deficiencies.

a few weeks ago i started with estrogen and have my progesterone sent from a compounding pharmacy...bioidentical. i was given a saliva test vs the blood tests and that told a very different story! my estrogen was so low that it was barely existent...as was my progesterone and testosterone! GET A SALIVA TEST DONE!

it's changing my life in so many ways! it has cleared up my mind...i was having a horrid brain fog and they were saying that it was "fibro fog" from fibromyalgia....which i have been undiagnosed from. it's even helping my sexual dysfunction from having no estrogen. my skin looks better...so much is changing back...i'm looking 45 again!

but i will have another DEXA in september so we'll see if it helps my bones too. people have been telling me how fantastic i look so it must be doing something...i can't believe how good i feel.

i wish they'd started me on this HRT years ago but my docs all insisted "i was too young for menopause"...now i have such horrible osteoporosis and lost years because my mental functioning declined, and lost sexual function.

but i am reminded that i can't get mad at ignorant physicians...i just have to move forward now and be grateful that someone finally did right, even if taking estrogen carries some risks because of my atypical ductile hyperplasia. that was no life i was living...i lost so much including my good bones (i had amazing bones).

i'll repost my results when i get that next DEXA.

45
menopause at 37
hip: -2.6
vertibrae: -3.4
reclast infusion: march '09
HRT bioidetical: may '09
calcium citrate 12-1500mg, D3 1-10,000iu
new DEXA september '09

oh...in october of '08 i suddenly began having fractures and had 5. two ribs, two vertibrae T-7, T-8 and my shoulder in november.

Dear Victoria Lynn -- I just started bioidentical hormones. I'm 63 and have had a hysterectomy. It's too soon to say if I'm having any luck, but my sister, with a similar profile, also uses John Lee's protocol, and has had fabulous success with it. Her bones are perfect! She started the regime before the DEXA scan was available, but even X-rays showed she had "old-looking bones." No longer!

Thanks... I think I will go for a consult with the local person who does the Bioidentical hormones...
I had a hysterectomy at 38.. should have started them... oh well...
thanks again for answering...
victoria

I hope you post your results! How was the reclast infusion? Would you do it again?

I never did reclast. Don't think I ever will.... I think I am over stuffing my body with drugs... ;-)

Hola VictoriaLynn,
where do you live in Mexico? I am getting desperate, living in Puerto Escondido which is one of the most beautiful places but no way to get bioidentical hormones. I have a friend in the States who brought it for me but now I am running out...
I have found Oestrogel, but I am searching for Progesterone and Testosterone. Can you buy this in Mexico? If so, any suggestions where?????
Txs.

Victoria -- my sister has had bone density increase using bioidentical hormones, following Dr. Lee's recommendations. She will be 60 in September, but had a hysterectomy in 1993. I'm now doing that, too, but it's been less than a year, so it's too soon to tell.

i had reclast last nov. wont know till Nov. if it works had no side affect other 4 month after, i drink water as much as i could for 2 days then ok. I had pain before and after, Had pain for over 21/2 years now can't take pain pills make me sick iam 76 One T 8 vertbrave fractor. Out of pain till start doing House work, i just live with it i would not know how to live with out pain lol

I live in San Miguel de Allende. The hormones are available at the local health store.
I hope you can find them.... or come on over to San Miguel!!

Heussey when you say your sister is following Dr John Lee's program is it the natural progesterone only or estrogen with it?

Alli- my sister uses both estrogen and progesterone. I believe Dr. Lee felt the combination was essential. Of course, the estrogen worries me about breast cancer, but the horror tests (which made me quit Premarin cold turkey) were with synthetic pills. I use Climara, a a bioidentical patch you stick on your lower tummy for a week, and I use the lowest dose available -- .025. The arguments rage on about whether it makes any difference if a hormone is bioidentical; my conclusion (which I admit could be wrong) is that bioidentical is safer. I also think anything used externally, like the patch and the cream, are safer than substances going through your digestive system. It's definitely a weighing of risk/benefit. I'm still interested in Denosumab. If it's not something that causes pain as a side effect, I want to consider it seriously.

Huessy thanks for info.. the reason I asked is because i use the progesterone cream but no estrogen. Like you i did use the estrogen pills but with the famous study and breast cancer decided against them. It is great that your sister has good bone density. I will check out the low dosage patch tho when i go to doctor.

Alli -- the lowest dosage estrogen patch is .025. My pharmacy had to order it especially for me, because no one else was using it. Apparently, though, Dr. Lee is very clear on this: estrogen and progesterone must go together, like a horse and carriage. I'm not sure I mentioned this -- when my sister first started this regime was before the DEXA scan was available. However, since then, her bone mass density has continued to improve with each scan. She exercises, eats an alkaline diet, takes vitamins but the biggie is the bioidentical hormones, with the progesterone cream being essential, even though she's had a hysterectomy. That's pretty much my story, too, but for years I was a couch potato and (gasp! choke!) a smoker. How could I have been so stupid???? (The truth -- I was a lawyer, so I was a nervous wreck.)

Medscape recently published a Q&A session with James A. Simon, M.D. about bioidentical vs. synthetic hormones. Here is one question and answer from that dialog:

Medscape: What are the risks and benefits of bioidentical hormone treatment compared with conventional hormone therapy?

Dr. Simon: The FDA, in all of the class labeling for conventional hormone therapy, has stated specifically that, in the absence of information to the contrary, all hormone products (ie, bioidenticals) are assumed to have the same risk as conventional therapies. While there is some information that suggests safety advantages of nonoral hormone therapy compared with oral hormone therapy as it relates to thrombosis risks, these benefits have not been demonstrated to date by compounded products.

Bonelady,
That is what I had read in several places... BIOIDENTICAL does not mean natural... it means it is manufactured from plants to have the same cell structure as our body hormones.... It is still PRODUCED... I have thought about the patch........ but that still goes in your system...
So hard to know the right answer....
Victoria

Hola Victoria, thanks for your reply. We have a cousin living in San Miguel, she could get the things for me and send them.
Do you know if there is a testosterone cream for women and if so, how they call it? What are the names for the progesterone and the estradiol?
What is the name of the store?

I am sorry to be a pain, but it is so difficult to get infos at the end of the world...

Thank you so much, Martina

Tell her to go to Moonrise on Organos near Quebrada... and talk to the owner (an american) She can tell her everything you need.
Who is your cousin?
