Just by accident bought Osteo K which looks great but I can't take calcium citrate and have a D3 I tolerate well. Can someone advise me on a brand of MK4 that doesn't have anything else in it? Thanks much

Further to my last reply. Sorry, but you must think me a real twit, I had just finished going through the forum on the National Osteo. Society (UK) and then saw your posting on this forum, had a senior moment and assumed you lived in the UK.
You can buy all you like and not have the worries of our UK Customs and their VAT duty.

How much MK-4 is recommended daily and how should it be taken?
Thanks everyone, you've saved me oodles of time. Really appreciate it!

Sorry, the link above was broken.
You can take anywhere from 2 mg 3x a day to 15 mg 3x a day, depending on what you can afford and how serious your condition is.
My bone condition is not serious and I increased my dose to 15 mg 3x a day because it was having such a beneficial effect on my skin and my sinuses.
Thank you. I was taking MK-7 but think it may be keeping me up at night so I wanted to switch. I did read that it is important to take the MK-4 three times a day and that it has been involved in more studies that show bone improvement.
Hi, Lilypads,
Wanted to say thanks again. I was grateful just to know what to look for (did notice the link was broken). The supplements world can keep one occupied big time, no? Best to everyone in health!
I don't think I've ever taken a supplement with beneficial effects as noticeable--and as quickly noticeable--as MK4. Problems I'd really given up on ever resolving are disappearing with MK4. If that's the case with the things I notice--my sinus congestion and my rough knuckles--I'm thinking there must be other things that I can't notice.
If my understanding is correct, we take MK-4 and MK-7 for different reasons. The MK-4 helps to build your bones, while the MK-7 is taken to try to stop the calcium building up the arteries and other organs, which can lead to heart attacks and kidney stones.
May I suggest that you try taking your MK-7 earlier in the day if it stops you from sleeping, especially if you take calcium supplements.
I thought they both did both. I have more reading to do. Can anyone suggest a site that distinguishes between the two? Thanks.
BigVits also supply. Both to UK and overseas - Europe, wherever. I found them to be a good company -
Lara Pizzorno's "Your Bones" describes the differences.
This article describes differences, and links to other articles: http://www.lmreview.com/articles/view/Vitamin-K2-Essential-for-Prevention-o f-Age-Associated-Chronic-Disease/
However, one reason Pizzorno cites for preferring MK7 is that the food sources of MK4--eggs, cheese, and butter--are high in calories and cholesterol. From my point of view, this is not a drawback at all. These fats are healthy fats and should not be avoided. The lipid hypothesis has been debunked, and may be one reason for widespread K2 deficiency. Another reason is that most cattle are now fed grains. The ultimate source of K2 in food is GRASS--butter and cheese and meat from grass-fed cattle. Since the best food source of MK7 is natto, a food consumed by relatively few people, it seems unlikely that it could be required for human health. Most people have neve heard of it.
Lara Pizzorno now says that recent genetic research is showing that some people do not process MK 7 quickly, so it builds up and causes sleeplessness and heart palpitations. for those people--perhaps about 30% of the population--MK4 is preferable,
More info on that will become available as more research is done.
Another good book is "Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox." However, the author of that book is Canadian, and in Canada all types of Vitamin K can only be sold in doses of 120 MICROgrams or less. Such low doses of MK4 would be useless. So the book assumes people will be using MK7, and the author is unaware that some people are unable to use it because of side effects.
If there are any Canadians reading this, getting that law changed would be a good job to take on, since MK4 is needed by 3 out of 10 people in Canada as well as elsewhere, to prevent atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.
lilypads,
With regard to the Ultra K2, how can you take 2 mg three times a day if each capsule contains 15 mg?
You have to open the capsule, divide it into 7 piles, and add each pile to a spoonful of coconut oil. Troublesome, but less expensive than any other method.
lilypads,
So I guess the capsules aren't timed release? (If they were, opening them wouldn't be advised.)
Hi sg5449,
I buy Carlson Brand Vitamin K2 menatetrenone (which is MK - 4) in 5 mg capsules, 60 capsules per bottle. I order it from Swanson Products but it is also available from iHerb and Vitacost so you can check the prices. Carlson Brand seems to be the only one that has MK - 4 without adding an other supplements to it.
Good luck!
Ultra K and Relentless Improvement also provide MK4 with nothing else added--both in 15 mg capsules, not timed release.
Timed release would be a great idea, however.

I buy Carlson Vitamin K2 menatetrenone ( this is MK-4) in 5mg capsules, 60 per bottle, from a company called iHerb in the USA, via the internet. The main problem is living in the UK, our Customs will charge you VAT at 20% on any orders over £15. If you tick the box for Royal Mail delivery, they will charge you about another £8 handling charge, to collect the VAT from you.
I first ordered a bottle of 180 tablets which worked out much cheaper per capsule. It arrived within 10 days and managed to get under the radar of the Customs, so I wasn't charged VAT. When I did this the next time the Customs got their grubby hands on it, and not only was I charged VAT, but it must have taken 5 weeks to arrive. I don't know whether this was the fault of the Customs or Royal Mail. Last time I ordered one bottle of 60 capsules which is under the £15 VAT threshold, so I didn't need to pay VAT and the bottle was delivered to my door as normal post, rather than having to collect it from Royal Mail / Post Office. The delivery time was approximately 2 weeks.
A regular contributor on the National Osteo. Foundation, who lives in the UK, suggested placing a bulk order to take advantage of any discounts at the time, but to have the Carrier deliver it, rather than Royal Mail. To do this you need to tick the appropriate box on the order form. The order is subject to VAT, but the Carrier doesn't charge as much as Royal Mail for collecting the VAT from you and will deliver it to your door in less than one week. I believe they send you a separate invoice for the VAT.
It's several months since I ordered any, so you will have to check the iHerb prices on line. You may also find other internet firms do Carlson products.
GOOD LUCK
