Have you tried going to pain management doctor? They have a lot of different methods to ease the pain.

I think you should see a Chiropractor. I work for one, and they truly can help.

Dear Mary:
I'm wondering if you could be a bit more specific about your condition and why you are on pain meds and muscle relaxants.
The "single best 'exercise' for most back pain" is to:
Lie on your back on the firmest surface you can tolerate; bring your arms out away from the sides of your body with palms UP; bend your hips and knees so that your feet are FLAT on the floor. No TV, no lifting weights, no reading. Just lie there and rest for 5-15 minutes. Do this AT LEAST once a day, preferable 2 or 3 if you are in as much pain as it appears. And, do NOT wait until you can't stand the pain to lie down. Do this "exercise" regularly.
Although there is a lot more you can do, this is a place to begin.

I like the exercise Sara described alot. Might want to add a bit of deep breathing with the intention to "massage" the back from the inside out while in the position.

Hello, I hope you don't mind if I ask ...... have you worked with people with osteoporosis? Thanks. Sandi

Every day

Billgpt, thank you for the reply. Sandi

I can attest to Sara Meek's advice on relieving pain..it works!!! There have been times when I have been too busy or rushed to do this exercise..and I have paid the price.

I can lie perfectly flat now without even a pillow but the bent knee position is best to start with and it does help..2 or 3 times a day..even 5 or 10 minutes will really help. I have Vicodin and almost NEVER take it now. I also take tumeric for inflammtion and have increased my Vit D..between those 3 simple additions to my life..I have decreased my daily pain from 7-9 to 2-4...and 4 is rare!

And if I am not the oldest one on these boards, I know I. must be close....my back is a mess, I had fibro for at least 40 years [that was before it had a name and I just thought it was normal to hurt all the time].

I never stop trying to learn and to help myself and I have found some gret stuff on these boards. The newest drug is not always the best way to go.

Raindancer:
I'm so glad this exercise has helped you. I do it fairly regularly myself and am amazed at how much better I feel after I rest my back a bit. I do most of my work standing and so need regular breaks.
In addition to the Decompression Exercise, as billgpt indicated, add some deep breathing. I generally begin with breath awareness first--just lie still and be aware of the breath. Then gradually deepen the breath a bit--exercises the diaphragm and intercostals too.
From there, I usually go to the Re-Alignment Routine--a series of 4 "exercises" some therapists call The Fab Four. You'd have to contact me privately so I could send the attachment. sara@sarameekspt.com.
Hope all this is helpful.
