ANXIETY LEVEL HIGH

My latest bone density now shows I am at a high risk for spinal fractures. I am 66 years of age.
My doctor wants me on Fosamax. I questioned him in regards to my concerns since I have not read one good thing regarding this med. His attitude was take it or don't take it. He did not put me at ease what so ever. So much for discussing my concerns. My fears are what may happen if I do not take
this medication but more so what can happen if I do.
My anxiety level is at an all time high, I'm just at a loss on what to do.

welcome Irish Rose, I understand your anxiety. Recently diagnosed at age 50, with a compression fracture. My dr knew nothing about this disease and prescribed me a bisphosphonate. I thank God every day that I found this site! I do not take the med, and was encouraged to buy a book called "Your Bones" by Lara Pizzorno. It really helped me alot! I encourage you to buy it too. I am on the vitamins and minerals that she says are needed for bone health. I tweaked my diet and exercise every day. My second dr found my Vit D level to be very low so I take a lot of that- has yours ever been checked? There is a website, betterbones.com that has a list of the tests to have and a list of the supplements needed.
There are many knowledgeable people on this site that can help you and encourage you. Go thru the prior posts- you will learn alot! I spent hours and hours on here when first diagnosed.
Good Luck!
Lorrianne

I can relate to your situation. Is the doctor you saw a specialist such as an endocrinologist who regularly treats patients with osteoporosis? If you can change to a supportive doctor that will discuss your options for medications vs no medication, and pros and cons, etc. I think you may feel more comfortable.

I have several fractures and don't want to get anymore. I've been taking Prolia which is an injection at six month intervals. One of the advantages is that it isn't ingested so my stomach doesn't hurt. I tried Fosamax early on, just one dose and had terrible heart burn and got off of it right away. I'm due to a Dexa scan soon to see if the medication (plus Calcium, Vit D, exercise) is doing any good. At least if my bone density is improving or lessening my risk of more fractures then I can probably deal with taking some type of medication. If no medication helps, then I can't see being at risk. I've been on and off medications since 2004.

Thank you Lorrieanne. Yes, my doctor did check my vitamin D level back in March or April and it was low.
I have been taking 2000 iu since then.

I will look for that book "Your Bones"

I am thrilled I found this website

Thanks again

Thanks for the info Taape. My doctor is a GP. I was looking to see who I could go to for a second opinion. Never thought of an endocrinologist. This is good news.

Just taking Advil gives me an upset stomach so I can only imagine what the Fosamax will do.

I wish you all the best on your DEXA scan.

Thanks again

Hi there, I, too, am about your age (67) and I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis (-3.6 on the dexa) in 2003. I tried the biphosphates ( fosomax, etc.) and couldn't tolerate the side effects. I asked a pharmacist to help me as I was in trouble. She gave me an article about Strontium and said they used it with good results in the UK and Australia, but I could not get it here. She was referring to the Strontium Ranalate, but I did find the Strontium Citrate, and took it (680 mg. per night) along with 1200+ mg. calcium, 3000 mg. Vit. D, 500 mg. magnesium and most recently Vit K2 complex). I did so for 5 years. I am now completely in the normal range - my dexa scores yesterday were a -.2 in the spine and a -.3 in the hips. (Normal is -1 to +1) I am going to take it one more year and be in the positive side and then stop. This past year I took 680 mg. for 4 months, took 340 mg. for 4 months and stopped completely for 4 months and still had a gain of 3%. ( Previously I had gains of 6 - 10% per year). I had no side effects whatsoever, and the neat thing is that I am way stronger now as well. I have had nasty falls to test the bones and they never fractured. IT WORKS! Good luck - it is found online at vitacost.com or doctorsbest.com. Charella

Hi Charella

This sounds very encouraging and terrific news that you are doing so well.
I've been doing so much reseach on my computer my eyes are blood shot. lol
The doctor said I am a -3.3. I do take 2000 iu of D3. I haven't been to faithful with the calcium, big mistake on my part.

I checked a couple of local places today but they only had the K2 7 not the mk-4 which from what I've read the mk4 is suppose to be the better of the two. I will check the sites you posted.

Thank you

You must be faithful in taking your calcium when you take strontium. You must take more calcium than strontium for it to work. Otherwise you could br worse. If I have forgotten my calcium I skip my dose of strontium. Kind regards, Charella :

I have also had GREAT results with Strontium Citrate. My scan scores improved trememdously within one year. Just be sure not to take your calcium at the same time as the strontium because both use the same receptors. Best of luck to you!

Try checking your vitamin D3 levels. Mine were so low that I was not properly absorbing the calcium needed to maintain bones. I also cannot take the drugs in the class of Fosamax and was very worried about their side effects. I take Miacalin nasal spray from which I have had no side effects. I also use estrogen patches (no progesterone since I had a hysterectomy 12 years ago).
