With Lucy PT's permission, I am reposting information with subject name for community members to easily access. The Section on Geriatrics, American Physical Therapy Association, has means for locating a PT with special interest in osteoporosis care throughout the country. Go to: www.geriatricspt.org and click on Find-A-PT on the left side of the home page. This allows community members to find someone with the background and location suitable. Useful information for the consumer is also available at this website. The Section on Geriatrics also has a Special Interest Section for Osteoporosis for Section members with this particular concern.

I got on this site and found three names of PT's but couldn't find the "special interest" section to which you refer for Osteoporosis. Haley/Margie

Hi Margie. Put Osteoporosis in the Search. There are some special interest areas that seem to be for PT's or health professionals only, but I was able to bring up exercise and several other
listings for osteoporosis that may be of interest. California law only permits PT by doctor referral; unless by chance there is a physical therapy department that has an outpatient osteo program which I am fortunate to have. I phoned every PT listed within 20 miles on the site and was told I could not work with a PT without a doctor's referral. I needed a note from my doctor, but I wasn't referred to any specific PT. I was able to attend an osteo exercise/support group out of area. Which brings up the situation which is often discussed. How to get a doctor to realize the importance of working with a PT on a wellness program instead of only giving patients with fractures the opportunity to work with a PT. Sandi

Actually, only three PT's were listed on the general site for geriatrics...and I'm aware of all these. One isn't that reputable, and the other two don't have a particular interest in osteoporosis per se. but I'll try as you suggested at some time.

I understand Margie. Bottom line is that osteoporosis support groups are needed in every area; not only the larger cities. We need more interest from physical therapy departments and hospitals that may already have other programs (cancer) to have osteoporosis low cost programs. We need more fitness professionals focused on bone loss. We need more specialized exercise areas such as Yoga and Pilates with more therapists in these specialized exercise fields with affordable costs. Hopefully, with the community members that work in the health field, we will be heard and eventually changes will be made. I think it's important that we voice what we need. Health professionals are not mind readers. How many of us were told we had osteoporosis; take calcium and exercise? That was all I was told 11 yrs ago. It's not good enough. Fortunately, we now have a place for our concerns and what we need to be heard. Who knows the ripple effect we may have for those coming behind us? The geriatric site wasn't of use to me, but maybe it was of use to another community member. If one person finds help by information on the community, it's a good thing.
