All My Teeth Ache -- Can Osteoporosis Cause?

I have been experiencing general overall aching of all my teeth, top and bottom, for several months now. Also have some minor jaw aching but symptoms don't seem like TMJ. I have osteoporosis and have been trying the natural approach since being diagnosed. Wondered if osteoporosis can affect the jaw and teeth by causing pain in both.

This is an interesting post and question. Had you started on some medication and asked if it was the cause of the pain, many here would tell you it definitely did. At this point, tho, I would rec a good dentist appt with xrays. Im not sure why you are sure it isnt TMJ- that pain can be mild or awful. Stress too and jaw clenching can cause that, as well as gum disease, sinus pressure, allergies, tooth sensitivity, referred pain from the neck or head,etc.. There are so many things that happen in the mouth and gums which affect our overall health, I wouldnt assume its related to weak bones elsewhere. Get several professional opinions before you embark on expensive dental work or reparations tho, ok?

Thanks for your reply. I thought because I wasn't getting a clicking or popping in the jaw joint or unable to open my mouth wide that it wasn't TMJ but like you said, TMJ pain can be mild or awful and I do feel mild jaw pain and when I do consciously try to relax my jaw and hold my tongue toward the upper front teeth the pain seems to be relieved a little bit. I went to my general dentist today and he didn't think it was TMJ but I'm thinking of getting a second opinion from a TMJ clinic. I definitely will seek several opinions and as conservative as possible approach to easing the pain.

One time I had terrible pain in all my teeth. I had some other issues around that time like buzzing lips and stinging pain in my face. I remember at one point taking one of those prescription relaxing pills (did not like that one). I also went to get cranial sacral massage. I just remember it went away as mysteriously as it came. I think it was tension or a virus. I seem to have TMJ now which is more like jaw pain and muscle pain arount the jaws then teeth pain. The doctors did a lot of tests and found nothing.

It may be TMJ. i have similar issues. Ii am not buying it'. I can NOT eat solid food. I have to eat baby food, etc. My teeth on right side and gums are painful. Have you ever thought about going to a chiropracter? It could be that the C-2 is in need of an adjustment. I had a need to to have NUCCA a few years ago and it really helped. (go to google and research it..or You Tube). It is not cheap. I had taken Fosamax about 8 years ago and developed bite issues after 8 months (when I stopped the Fosamax the issues went away) and now have extreme arthritis in my r jaw bone. I find that interesting. I would not rule out going to a chiropractor or going back for more cranial sacral massage or researching NUCCA. I am going to 'my' chiropractor tomorrow. I wonder if you have Wry's neck? (muscle pain). That's what I was diagnosed with about a month ago. On the phone on Friday the chiro said it sounds like my neck needs an adj. We'll see!

Hi. I have been having similar problems for about 5-6 months. It started with a noticeable clicking noise when I speak, sounds like bubble wrap being popped sort of. It's not constant and sometimes is worse than other times. My husband and anyone else I ask says they can't hear it, it's very loud to me. Then I noticed that my teeth were aching, and recently my jaw has also been aching. I have osteopenia and thought that might have something to do with it. I went to the dentist twice, had xrays which showed nothing. I have had problems with teeth grinding at night in the past, but haven't been doing that lately (according to the hubby - it used to wake him up). I do feel myself clenching my jaw/mouth sometimes - things have been stressful lately. Anyways, the dentist said TMJ, so I started wearing a night guard, which really hasn't helped. He also prescribed a muscle relaxer, which doesn't seem to do much either. The issue is still continuing, so my regular doctor suggested I go to an oral surgeon, the dentist said go to an ear, nose, throat specialist. So, I guess I'm gonna start with the oral surgeon, and then go to the ENT guy if necessary.

If you come up with any solutions or explanation for your problem, I'd be interested in hearing them. Thanks.

I tried flexeril, a muscle relaxer, and that didn't help. Valium helps a little. But the one thing that helps the most for me is using moist heat on my jaw. I wet a wash cloth, put it on my face, and hold the hot water bottle on top. I do this about 3-4 times a day for about 15 minutes at a time. It really relieves the symptoms but I hope I don't have to do this the rest of my life.

For those of you that have used the cranial sacral massage, could you tell me a little bit about what it is? Thanks.

And I wondered what kind of dentists specialize in occlusion. I don't think my orthodontist knows much about it because I have a very strange bite now and my lower jaw feels like it recedes too much. I've had my braces off for about a year now.

My bite seems to have gotten strange too. I feel the back teeth on one side touching. The dentist said my bite is screwy and thinks clenching is a problem and had recommended botox. But the pain is less. Several months ago I tried this painkiller supplement (very expensive from Norway. called Normast) for something else. Well it did not help the something else, but I noticed my jaw feeling a bit better. But quite frankly I think it is one - I realized I'm always touching those teeth together so to relax then, and two - I saw some jaw exercizes on youtube so I did some of that - especially slowly opening mouth up and down while jaw straight (no sideways motion) . Also pushing jaw sideways against hand, but not letting it actually move sideways, pulling jaw up while holding chin - to strenghten muscles. Also very important - the trigger point therapy workbook said you've got to stick your fingers in your mouth and massage your inner cheeks and press back against the fin like part where the jaws come together. If it is painful then you may have trigger points to work on. I did some of that and I can open my jaw more and it is not as painful. It is not all gone, because I got lazy, but I think the self help things can help if it is TMJ.

You could have bruxism - clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth in your sleep. I have a night guard that the dentist made for me. If I don't use it, I don't sleep well and have lots of pain in the morning.

Has anyone ever had problems with a clicking sound when they speak? It's very strange, and I don't think it's associated with the TMJ. Thanks.

Patti7, with regard to an earlier post "you could have bruxism - clenching your jaw and/or grinding your teeth in your sleep" here is a suggestion. Wal-Mart has a mouth guard for sports. Look around the football section in the store. I don't want to put anything in my mouth to sleep, but I do use this inexpensive (under $2.00) mouth guard during the day when I'm home. If your problem is merely tightening your jaw either awake or asleep the mouth guard might relax your jaw enough so you get some relief. It's worth a try and will cost a few pennies. Also, I tried the adult size, it was too big, so I tried the child size and it's fine.

Thanks so much for your suggestion. I think I will give it a try. I think I might be clenching my jaw during the day as well as in my sleep so I'd definitely like to try wearing it during the day.

do you use an electric toothbrush, saw two people recently both developed jaw aching with an electric toothbrush, which went away about 2 weeks after stopping its use

patti7, I'm glad you'll try the mouth guard. It's working for me. It's WILSON NFL mouth guard. It's one piece and fits over either your upper or lower teeth. I'm using it on the lower teeth. Here's a hint. Carefully follow the instructions about fitting the guard to your teeth. I did not like the whole piece in my mouth so I cut it down the middle; now I have an extra guard. I just need something there to help relax the jaw, but I still don't want to use it while asleep.
