Advice pls as visiting new consultant

0 Recommendations

Hi all

Have secured an appointed with a new endo consultant and as this can be somewhat difficult in the UK I would really like to know what any of you would advise i need to ask with reference to if i have been tested for all possible reasons for my Osteoporosis.

A bit of background, altho have posted before.

At age 31, day after giving birth to my first baby fractured 3 vertebra after a mild trauma (backrest on bed shot backwards). Total agony as many of you know!!
When eventually dexa scanned 4 mths later spine score was -3.96 and hips - 2.05. Has been extremely hard as wasn't able to look after my baby without help, altho did manage to breastfeed for 3 mths (before I knew about Osteo). My baby also has a genetic condition which means she's visually impaired, could do without back problems too!! Ha ha

My score 12 months on improved to - 3.42 (about 10%) and hips slightly worse altho at -2.12 not much difference.

Haven't taken any drugs as may want another child, altho feel i should get this idea out of my head as odds stacked against us! Have taken a prescribed dose of calcium and Vit D.

My health in past has been good, altho did suffer from endometrosis (gyne condition) and took various treatments altho none stopped my cycle. Have also always been naturally very slim, didn't have big appetite as a youngster but again always maintained a regular monthly cycle.

Sorry to waffle but have been told have been tested for all conditions related to Osteo and there is no reason I should have it but my scores are too low for it to be just pregnancy related. I feel medical profession are missing something and want to make sure I ask everything I should?

Hope this is okay to post and not too long winded.

Best regards to everyone xx NCH

I don't really have any advice, your story just touched me and want you to know you are not alone. I am 34 with osteopenia in spine and osteoporosis in my hip. I was diagnosed at 31 when I had only 1 child and since have had 2 more. My spine scores improved with no meds but hip worsened and am now taking Fosamax since am done having kids. Although I am researching natural alternatives. Have you had your thyroid, Vit D and estrogen levels checked? I would be curious as to what the specialist has to say. Good luck!

Check out all thyroid and parathyroid functions, get a 24 hour urine calcium test, plus a full blood panel, and a Vitamin D test, preferably using DiaSorin method lab.Good luck with it.

Make sure you are tested for Celiac disease!!! Often the cause of Osteoporosis in young women!!!
I know that was true for me ... took forever to find out about it... In the USA they just do not test for it.
It is not a rare condition... 1 in every 125-150 people have it...
Good luck!!! Sending you white light and lover

Good suggestion, Victoria

thank you all for replying and for your advice.

Check PTH levels. Although I'm sure an endo will do that w/o asking.

Just following up on this one. Did you have your appointment yet?

Hi

yes have posted since appointment under 'update and running machines'.

Have had all blood tests taken again but will probably take few weeks at least to get results.

Sorry if I should have posted my update here and thanks for asking how i got on.

xx
