4 Great Alternatives to the Treadmill and Elliptical

Your basement or garage is plenty of space to create a good workout that will be far superior to the treadmill or elliptical. Here are some suggestions:

1. Buy a beach ball and try to bounce it off the wall fifty times without it touching the floor.
2. Do wall touches where you run (or walk quickly) side to side and touch two opposite walls 50 times.
3. Try the double cross by running (or walking) forward four steps. Now back up eight steps. Come forward four steps and go to the left four steps. Now go back to the right eight steps. Come back to the center four steps and repeat.
4. Buy a basketball or playground ball and bounce it 50 times as you move around in a big circle. Try it with your right and then your left hand. When you get really good switch back and forth.

10 to 15 minutes of this activity to start working up to 30 minutes 3 times a week is all you need. It doesn’t take much to get a great cardio workout which also provides balance, body fat control, coordination, body control and weight bearing.

I love this kind of workout which would be fun and has the convenience of your own place and time and amount of effort.
I have a suggestion to add.
I have suspended a ball to the garage ceiling. It's on a strong nylon cord and is at chest height. It is great fun to punch this ball, as hard as you want to, again and again as it swings around.
I use a soft ball, a tennis ball is too light. Haven't tried a basketball size yet or boxing gloves!

Hi Woody,
I am dealing with patella tendonitis so I can't run or walk fast - (or twist the leg) although I walk at a normal gait. I can't do elliptical or treadmill... so I walk the neighborhood and aqua jog. My PT said as long as I am weightbearing (walking daily and weight training 3x a week) I will build bones density. Do you agree?My cardio I get while aqua jogging(which I make challenging - I don't just float there). And of course I eat the prunes, kale, collards, use the Juvent machine and take the D3, calcium, mag. etc... whew - quite a regime.

Hi Woody,

You are truly an amazing guy, if you have that much space available in your garage or basement. If I found that much empty space, my wife would have it full of "stuff" within a month. I have to admire those who can control clutter.

By the way, I've been planning to ask you this. If I have to resort to the treadmill this winter (tucked into a corner of my garage), will I get some bone strengthening by running it on an incline? Thanks,
