Hello...this is all new to me..I was diagnosed in Oct. 2008- the Dr's have started me on Bonevia- this makes me very sick for about 5 days..not sure why-anyone else on this? also they have me on Estradiol 3mg...i was told I need to be on this until I am 50, but if I am already post- why do I have to be on this...i am afraid of the long term side effect...I was diag. with premature ovarian falure that lead into a full hysterectomy-bi/lateral oopectomy....
any thoughts would be great, I feel alone alot and have no one to talk to about this..

Actonel Hysterectomy Menopause Boniva Estradiol Osteoporosis

I've been taking Boniva 150mg for at least 10 months now, with no problems. But I accredit it with the way I take it, which differs slightly from how the package says to take it.

The package says to take it with a full 8 ounces of water (from what I recall). But it also says (in so many words) that it can severely burn your esophagus and stomach. To me, if something is going to burn that much, 8 ounces might not be enough.

So, considering the burning effects, I decided that it would be best to put a decent amount of water in my stomach first in order to buffer it against the acid and lubricate the esophagus.

So, here's what I do. Don't know if it would help you, but maybe it will:

First, I drink a full cup of water just before taking the pill.
Then, I take the pill with two more cups of water.
Then of course, I strictly follow the instructions about staying upright, not eating, etc.
If I start to feel a slight burning, I drink one more cup of water, and the burning goes away.

Hope it helps you, too.

Post-menopausal women lose bone density faster because of lack of estrogen. That's why your doctor prescribed it: to protect your bones.

That is also the way I take my weekly Actonel. I drink much more than the recommended amount. I also wait until at least 45 minutes before I eat breakfast. I've never had any problems with Actonel, but every patient responds differently to meds.

Onelife, I watched a Oprah special last night on menopause and hormone replacement... if you get an opportunity to go to her website or buy her magazine I think it's well worth the investment... she introduced an authors journey (Robin McGraw) "What's age got to do with it" and Dr. Christine Northrup who has a book out titled "The Wisdom of Menopause" The importance of proper hormone balance and our bodies which I've also wondered if it didn't contribute to my Osteoporosis... my doc seems to think so as I had a hysterectomy at 33. When they tell you that you're in "normal" range which I had highly doubted I felt so good finding out that lots of women are told this... but it's not just one hormone its several.. read up...

I take hormone .Livil and that has helped me... so ask your doctor:)

Hi Onelife,

I found out last June I had Osteo. I was paniced about it also..
Acouple of months ago, I took one monthly Bonvia, and all my joints hurt me for two weeks, plus feeling awful. I never took another one! But it might work out great for your bones.
I have been trying to check out all my options!

I started taking Strontium Citrate. You can buy it at the health food store. When Taking strontium you cannot take your Calcium at the same time. About 2, 3 hours apart, and you would have to stop taking it a month before taking a bone scan..I also takeCalcium, D3, Mag, minerals, etc.

Here is some info about Stontium citrate. But you might want to go to, www.google.com..and look around there!

*Strontium is a naturally occurring mineral present in water and food. Trace amounts of strontium are found in the human skeleton. Strontium has an affinity for bone and is taken up at the bone matrix crystal surface. The influence of strontium on bone metabolism has been researched since the 1950's. Studies indicate that strontium positively effects bone metabolism to promote bone formation and decrease bone resorption, leading to normalized bone density. Helps maintain strong, healthy bones.

When I was in Costco I bought Dr. Northrups book and Robins.
Robin is Dr. Phil's wife.
I have other books of Dr. Northrup. I think there worth reading . I have not read Robins's book yet!
You can also try the library for books on Osteoporosis, although I have only found out dated books , but I live in a small town in California !

I also go to a Physical Therapits (P.T.). She has showed me how to exercises, what I can and cannot do. How to build muscle, how to build your inner core etc.
Btw, do not twist at your waist etc.
I think a P.T. is very important to go to.

Stay Proactive about your Osteo, and keep reading on this site, and everywhere..I have gotten allot of very good information here..

Hope your feeling better,
and Your not alone-o:
April
