I am a 27 year old female (single, no children or pregnancies) who has had ONE pap smear in her life (yes, shame on me) and the ONE pap smear came back abnormal. (LGSIL with high risk HPV were the results) My doctor immediately ordered a colposcopy and biopsy procedure which was done approximately one week ago. The nurse called me with the results of the three biopsy sites as well as the ECC. Two of the sites came back mild, and a third came back as "Unable to determine mild or moderate, favors CIN 2". The ECC came back 'clean'. My doctor is now recommending a LEEP procedure under general anaesthesia.
I mentioned to the nurse about "Watchful waiting" since it was inconclusive and her response to me was "Well, I would hate for you to have to get a hystorectomy."
I am feeling very pressured that I need to do this RIGHT NOW, but according to the numerous websites I've read, this is generally a slow progression. Given the fact that I have had ONLY one pap smear in my entire life, there is no history to consider. I do not have any of the typical risk factors.
I think I need to obtain a second opinion, but I'm unsure who I should seek out. Do I need a gyn/onco or just a regular gyno? I don't want to utilize a specialist's time when someone else may really need them. Any advice? I did have difficulty with the biopsy/colposcopy, so I am not eager to jump right in. Thanks in advance, I look forward to your response.

HPV Watchful waiting Stress

hi, blueskadoo. you're very right that having LGSIL and CIN1/CIN2 does not need immediate medical treatment, and if you're an otherwise healthy woman, you will probably clear the dysplasia and hpv infection on your own. a watch and wait approach would be very appropriate, particularly if you take steps to help your body clear the hpv infection (no smoking, no tampons, using condoms, avoiding any vaginal infections/inflammations, taking DIM supplements or eating cruciferous vegetables with DIM, lowering stress, getting plenty of sleep, etc.). And, shame on your nurse for using scare tactics that are just plain unsupported with medical facts for your situation. if your doctor is not supporting your watch and wait approach, you may want to see another gynecologist who understands that medical interventino is not always needed. a gynecologic oncologist is probably not needed....just an excellent and knowledgeable gynecologist. hope this helps....let us know how you're doing!
