So, I just recently had my pap test come back with HSIL. When I called to talk to someone they told me to read the info on the papers they sent me. This helped alittle, but there are still lots of questions! Is it ok to have sex if you have HSIL? Is HSIL like an STD? Will I be able to get rid of it? Will it affecty ablity to have kids? Are cramps normal before having the test if nowhere near your period? If anyone could help me out, that would be great. I've never had an abnormal pap before and well, at 31 didn't think I would. I'm trying not think the worst, but let's face it anytime the C word comes up dealing with your girl parts it isn't cool. Thanks a bunch!

Hi Mokakat77,

Did your PAP also come back High Risk HPV positive? It's really important to know that. HSIL itself is not an STD, but a result of High Risk HPV which is an STD you get from (skin) genital to genital contact. HSIL means you have high grade cervical cells changes, aka, dysplasia. Did your doctor schedule you for a colposcopy? That is the next step after an abnormal PAP. A colposcopy is a procedure that allows your dr. to look at your cervix very closely and detect abnormal cells. A biopsy and ECC are usually done also, and the cells get sent to the lab for furhter testing to confirm the grade of your dysplasia. At that point, you may go in for a procedure to get rid of the bad cells. Usually a LEEP procedure.

Getting all this info from your dr. will help you get the treatment you need as soon as possible. Good Luck and keep us posted.

xoxo

My pap came back with HSIL. I do have a colposcopy in a few weeks. My doctor really didn't give me slot of answers other then the papers they sent. I found this site and saw how many women had just as many questions as I had. Figured I could definatly get some help here! Everyone seems very helpful and I am very greatful for the help. I will keep people posted....

Hey,

As far as I know (and I'm not an expert- this stuff confuses the hell out of me) if you have a steady partner then he or she probably already has the same hpv strain you have (but men are usually just carriers with no symptoms unless its the warts type) so you can keep having sex with that person. once you have it it can go dormant and then you'd test negative for HPV, but it's always lurking inside you, so it's not like you have to be careful of passing it back and forth. I've been pretty weirded out by the sex part of this too, and can't really imagine having sex with someone I wasn't, like, going to MARRY (which is a change in thinking for me) now that I know what can come of it- even using condoms doesn't totally protect against it. But apparently it does help, and you're supposed to use them if you have SIL I think. I am in a relationship and it has kind of killed our sex life because I'm worried about it causing throat cancer and i just feel generally uncomfortable about the whole thing, and so does my partner. But I don't know how much of that is valid fears. My doctor told me to just keep having sex and that there's no point at this stage to take special measures in a long-term relationship. She didn't mention new partners.

You can get rid of the bad cells with the LEEP and it shouldn't cause any problems with having a baby. Some people have trouble after having numerous removal procedures, but I think usually the first LEEP is effective and you won't need anything more done.

I know a lot of people who have had the LEEP (not me, yet..) and they all say it's really no big deal.

Keep us posted!
