Too Much Pain

0 Recommendations

I have posted before on this site about my 36 yr. old daughter who was dx in Jan. 08 with cc. She had a radical hysterectomy in Feb. 08 and now the cancer is in her lung, chest wall, and 1 lymph node in her neck. She has had 3 rounds of chemo, 2 rounds of radiation, and is now in a clinical trial using immunotherapy. She is in a tremendous amount of pain and can hardly get out of bed even though she is on morphine. Has anyone out there used anything else that worked for pain relief?! It is heartbreaking.

hi,
i don't know anything about pain relief, but just to let you know my thoughts are wit h you, it must be an awful situation to be in. i hope your daughter gets well soon, or at least that her pain will improve

same here

My grandfather is currently battling stage IV pancreatic cancer. His doctor has him on a fentanyl patch and Hydrocodone with Apap. This combination of meds seems to be managing his pain.

Fentanyl is good, patch stays on for 3 days. Long acting but you can have "breakthrough" analgesics as well. Hydromorph contin is also good (dilaudid). Some pain meds work better on cancer pain than others. ..There are many combinations they can use to manage her pain. The main thing to remember is for her to take the pain meds regularly, not wait until she is in pain, and bad pain, or the meds take longer to work. Don't be worried about narcotic addiction. If she is taking them for the intended purpose, thats not an issue. Like I said, most important thing is follow a routine - around the clock dosing with breakthroughs if needed.

I am so sorry to hear she is in so much pain...what is the cause/sight of her pain, exactly? Try getting an acupuncturist (preferably one who specializes in traditional chinese medicine) in to do some sessions on her. I had horrible sciatic pain from the cc and treatment, and it kicked it. It might sound silly, but therapeutic meditation may help. Talk to pastoral care/psychosocial resources at your hospital for info on what is available to her.

Tell Julie we are praying for her and keeping her in our thoughts. keep us up to date on what is happening....

i'm sorry to hear she's in so much pain. does the hospital have a pain management clinic that may be able to assist with providing different options?

The cancer clinic I went to had pain management available to whomever felt the need to seek it. My rad/onc prescribed me morphine for pain but I never felt the need to take it........I actually still have it.

Cancer is a BITCH and it HURTS in more ways than one............

Her drs should be able to keep her pain in check but she HAS to inform them that she is struggling with pain. Also chemo and rads can and will bring about various pains that we otherwise would never experience. I would inquire as to what part of her pain is in relation to her treatmants.

Wishing you and your daughter well..........

Thank you so much for your replies. Julie is in the hospital now and receiving IV morphine with better results. She has also had some fluid tapped from her lung. I am flying to Portland tomorrow and will stay with her family as long as necessary. Please pray for us, her husband Scott, and little 6yr. old daughter, Luka. Thanks again for your support. Jane

Jane, I am so sorry to hear this, but glad they are getting the pain under control. From everything I have read and heard, little Luka is a very smart cookie and knows exactly what mommy is going through right now...:(

I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the thoracentesis (fluid tap) helps with the pressure and pain. Please keep in touch and let us know how she is doing.

Be Strong, and let HIM guide you.
many, many ((((hugs))))
Robin
