I'm a 22 year old mom to two children, one's two and the other is 4 months. I recently went to the doctor in May and the doctor called me back to the office 3 weeks later to review my test results from my pap smear.. which has never happened before. So immediatly i was alarmed.. He told me that it had come back stating that I had some abnormal cells. To confirm this I was sent to my gyno to have a biopsy performed. It was just suppose to be for a consultation but the doc said that it "must have" indicated major changes so right then and there he performed a colposcopy, and said he needed to do a biopsy. So once again I was thinking this is serious.. so scared! Well the biopsy came back saying that I only had mild cervical cell changes/dysplasia. BUT he wanted to perform a LEEP procedure because he thought it was something more invasive than that. And perhaps he didn't attain enough tissue. Which I don't understand how he couldn't have. He clipped it 5 times! He says that the procedures are all yielding different results. He says from looking at it, it appears to be worse than a mild case.. but the biopsy tells a different story. That it's only mild. Anyone else had this problem??? And what was the outcome?? And how accurate are biopsies? I know that's alot of questions but I'm alarmed... just plain scared.. please HELP ME! Thank you... Nicole

Get a copy of your biopsy results, that way you can read them for yourself. If the test are all yielding different results I believe another biopsy is in order to confirm the first. If it is mild and that is confirmed by 2 different biopsies then I would not have a LEEP as mild dysplasia typically clears itself. Finally I would get a second opinon before having any procedure. I got 3 and all 3 told me about the same thing, so I feel comfortable moving on.
Also you can request that your tissue for the biopsy be sent to another lab for the pathologist there to read it. Good Luck.

hello, neecoal. i would recommend you get a copy of the medical records so you can see what each of the 5 biopsies showed. if you have CIN1, mild dysplasia, then you may want to wait before you have a leep. in fact, your pregnancy may have been what provided a 'good' environment for the dysplasia to develop....many women with hpv develop dysplasia during pregnancy. most young healthy women will clear mild dysplasia on their own without any treatment. and, why is the doctor thinking that the situation is worse than what the biopsies are showing? did he explain? do you know why he took so many biopsies? were they from different areas of the cervix because he saw abnormalities in many areas? perhaps a second opinion is worthwhile at this point. if you can clear the dysplasia without surgery, and clear your hpv infection (i'm assuming you're hpv positive at this point?), then that would certainly be preferable to surgical intervention. i would encourage you to eat healthy foods, get enough sleep (not easy with little kids!), exercise, practice yoga/meditation, and reduce stress. a second opinion doctor might tell you to give yourself 3 to 4 months to see if this clears on its own! you need to find a doctor who is practicing medical excellence, and i don't know your current doctor but he can certainly provide you with more information.......ask lots of questions, do research. knowledge is power.

when my pap came back it was atypical witch is usally not severe at all but my dr. did a coloscpy and a biopsy and 3 out of the 4 places came back severe cin3 so i had a leep done and hope that doesnt bring back diffrent results also when my dr. did my biopsy he said he didnt see anything he thought maybe the lab had made a mistake or i had a infection then came back cin 3 he was even suprised so that freaked me out well i hope they figure things out for you because the toughest part for me is not knowing ill have you in my thoughts keep me updated.

Def. get copies of your medical records. My case might be extreme but I had abnormal paps and biopsies for a few years. The biopsies the doc was taking were not being taken from the "right spot" or they were "too small of samples" according to the oncologist and radiologist I go to now. I also should have gotten a leep done long ago, but I didn't have the internet and knowledge that I have now. I trusted the doc who said nothing needed to be done. I have two babies ages 2.5 and 10 months. I was diagnosed with stage 2a cervical cancer in Feb and found out the lymph nodes were involved also making it 3b cancer.

I agree that mild dysplascia can go away on it's own but if you get pregnant again soon or if you immune system is not keeping up... I'd be worried.

If you aren't totally comfy with your doc now, get another opinion....

Thank you all for your support and advice!! It was really helpful. And I got the results.. I'm goin to start a new discussion on it.. Thanks again! My prayers are with you all.
