pelvic exenteration

0 Recommendations

My mom was diagnosed with cervical cancer IIB 14 years ago. She was treated with radiation. She is now 62 years old, and cancer is recurred. Doctor recommended Pelvic Exenteration with radiation. We are in the process of making a decision. Can any survivors please share your experience of your life after Pelvic exenteration. How do you cope with it? Could there be any complications in the surgery?

We are trying to get as much info as we can to support our decision.

Fromwithlove - What a wonderful daughter you are to reach out for information for your mom. Last year I was scheduled for a PE but when they opened by abdomen to start the surgery they found tumors splattered everywhere so stopped the surgery. They felt the benefit of the surgery did not outweigh the risk. Prior to the surgery however, I had several appointments with many doctors and a psychologist since this is such a radical procedure. I only know of one person who has had this surgery and I was able to talk with her last year. At that time she was almost 7 months out and was doing well. I hope that she will see your post and respond. Where is your mom having her surgery? Hopefully they have her meet with all the surgeons involved before she has to make her decision.
Best of luck to your mom.
Blessings & prayers - Janet

Formomwithlove - I know your mom is so proud of you for what you are doing!! I had a total pelvic exenteration in january 08. I had it done at Vanderbilt hospital. I am going to tell you it was not easy. I was 37 at the time of surgery. They told me everything that they where going to do however, it was still a shock when I woke up. It is hard to deal with the loss of control. I know that sounds odd but even the smallest things we control like when you go to the bathroom if hard to loose. It has been almost two years since my surgery and I have to say I am doing good. Do I like this..NO but I am not going to let it define me. I do anything that I want. I swim, play softball, coach my little girls softball team, go camping. Please let your mom know that it is alot to deal with but she will conquer it. Please keep the Faith too..that has helped me tremendously. I would be glad to talk with you anytime if you like (270-210-9797). God Bless!!
Kim
