Hello,
I'm new to all of this and I'm really really scared. I got a phone call today from my local health department saying that I had an abnormal pap come back and that I had cancer cells on my cervix. I don't know what any of this means and to tell the truth when I heard the woman say this I just kind of went numb. I have to go pick up my results tomorrow and I already made a dr. appointment with my regular dr. I guess i'm just writing this to find some support and answers. What should I expect, what is going to happen. The worse part about all of this is that I just got my husband back home from Iraq and this weekend is our 3 year anniversary and our first one together with our daughter. I'm so upset right now, could I be upset over nothing? I sure hope so. Also if anyone knows, can I still get pregnant after all of this, cause we were in the process of trying for baby Number 2? If you wouldn't mind please write me a line to help calm me down, I feel so lost.

Lynnielousmom08: Well, at this point you have just had a pap which warns that there are some changes to your cervical cells. Did they say that you were tested for HPV and there is an active strain in your system?

The next thing that is probably going to happen is a colposcopy. This is where they will take a sample of your cervix (not generally painful) and the will also perform an ECC which is a swab of the inside of your cervical canal to see if there are any changing cells in there.

The fact that you are young is great. These changes are probably due to HPV. The pap is done to show any changes, it is not generally used to rule in cancer, only to warn that there are some changes going on. So what you need to do is keep your colposcopy appointment (if that is what you have made) and don't worry. I really don't feel at this point like you have too much to worry about, :o) Your colposcopy will tell your doctors whether or not you have dysplasia (caused by HPV). Dysplasia is graded like this: mild=CIN1; moderate=CINll; severe=CINlll; and then cancer.

It is fabulous you thought to get a copy of the results! When you get them you can come back to the site and let us know what your report reads and some ladies here will be able to decipher them for you :o)

Make sure to start taking a good multi-vitamin. I take one calle "Life's Fortune", it is food based; therefore, one of the best ones on the market today. It has done amazing things for my energy. A lot of ladies here swear by DIM which is a supplement found in cruciferous veggies. It has been clinically proven to help clear up dysplasia. Also, vitamin C helps to raise your immune system.

Try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, cutting out smoking as soon as possible of you are a smoker, cutting back on the red meats, exercising, relaxing, etc. Your youth is going to be beneficial. When I was 22 I was told that I had HPV and CINl-CINll dysplasia, which is mild to moderate dysplasia. I was pregnant at the time. My pap after child birth was normal and was for another 10 years. I am now 33 and just found out that the HPV is active again or I had gotten a different strain. I do not have dysplasia though so that is good.

Yes, children are very possible still; although, it is better to wait until you come out with a clean pap as HPV is more active during pregnancy due to your body giving more energy to your pregnancy and not to fighting the HPV.

I hope I have been of some help :o) Don't forget to get a binder to put all your medical documents in so that you do not lose track of them.

Best wishes to you and please come back and let us know how all is going :o)

Thank you so much you have helped me out alot. I will let everyone know as soon as I do. I have to go get my results tomorrow and then I have a dr. appointment on mon. at 3:30. I'm sure I will have to get referred to a gyno for my testing so hopefully it wont take to long to get me in for all of that. Thank you once again for all of the information. I'll be talking to you soon

sorry to hear that you're going through this. you'll want to find out more specifically what the abnormal test result indicated....for instance, it can indicate ASCUS, or LGSIL or HGSIL, which all have different meanings, from inflammation to low grade dysplasia to high grade dysplasia. some people call dysplasia 'pre cancer', but many times it won't progess to cancer, and may even regress. once you have a colposcopy where the doctor will examine your cervix and vagina with a microscope type instrument, and take biopsies as needed, you'll get a better diagnosis of what's going on, and be able to get next steps. take a deep breath....and you'll get through this. let us know how you're doing!

lynnielousmom08: i just recieved news last year about bad cells in my cervix, was supposed to get a cone biopsy but kind of fell apart. anyhow a new year, just had a cone biopsy done. waiting for dr. to call or my 2 week check. im scared as heck too. ive had very few sexual partners (2) during my life. so i dont know how i even got it? (hpv) anyhow, i love this site, it helps tremendously. hang in there and we will pray for eachother! its been 1 week and 1 day since my cone. ovaries are sore, tummy is swollen and still bleeding. uggggggggggg. its gotto get better than this. cant do too much of anything or the bleeding gets heavier. wondering whats next?????? you are in my thoughts...

ok ladies,
I got my test results today and it says that i have "high grade squamous intrapithelial lesion, encompassing: moderate to severe dysplasia, (CIN 2/ CIN 3/ CIS). I was also wondering, my mom is a lpn/lvn and she was talking at work to one of the other girl who's sister-n-law had CIN3 dysplasia and the dr. told her to go have a baby and it would help clear all of it out, well she did and 4 years later has a beautiful little boy and great test results since she has had a child, I wonder if this could work for me. I guess I'll have to ask the dr. Well let me know what you got to say. If i don't post in a few days it's because I'm going camping for my anniversary! Thanks and God bless!

glad to hear you received your test results. i've not heard of pregnancy clearing severe dysplasia....some women will clear it on their own....but most doctors will recommend that it be treated medically to be sure that it doesn't progress to CIS or cancer. At this point, you've only had a pap smear which is a screening test, and the next thing that needs to occur is a colposcopy with biopsies so that the doctor can better determine a diagnosis.
