negative HPV, positive Pap?

0 Recommendations

Hi, I had a cone last March for CIN II and III. I have since had one clear pap. I just got the results of my latest pap and it was ASCUS with negative HPV. The doctor wants to wait 6 months for another pap since it is HPV negative "I am in the clear". Frankly, this confuses me. Does this sound right?

hi, newhere. sorry to hear you didn't get a fully normal pap. it's good news that the hpv test was negative! an ascus pap with a normal hpv test can be from inflammation, recent sex, having the pap done near your period, and so forth. if you're feeling uncertain and stressed, perhaps you can see your doctor again in 3 or 4 months, rather than 6?

Thanks for your reply. I guess my nervousness comes from having many ASCUS results and being told to watch and wait, and then last November I had ASCUS again with a positive HPV. We did a coloscopy which came back CIN II, then the Cone results came back CIN II and III. So, I don't have a lot of faith in these screenings. Also, at my last visit I asked my doctor if we would continue HPV screening. He said there is no reason to since it can stay dormant or active indefinitely. So, when I got the results 1) that they did the test and 2) that they are using that as a basis to not proceed with exploration I was confused. My doctor's nurse is impossible so I got a very condescending response. I have made an appointment with another gyn in Dec and will be changing offices. Hope the test is right and I am "in the clear" as the nurse said!!

Hi newhere -- it would be good to repeat the HPV test just to be sure, since none of the tests are 100%accurate all the time. But if HPV is truly not active, then ascus is most likely, as flowershoplady said, inflammation due to healing from your procedure.

I have made an appointment with a new gyn in Dec to be checked again and to have someone I can actually talk to. I doubt the ASCUS is inflammation from the procedure though as it has been 9 months and I had a clear pap in those nine months. Thanks for replying.

Hi Newhere,
I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I had a similar experience last year. During my pregnancy I had an abnormal pap but my hpv was negative so they said not to worry about it. They weren't going to do another pap until the next year (this last June). I had several red flags during my pregnancy and still no one was concerned because the hpv was negative. 2 months post-partum I insisted on more tests including another pap and hpv test: my pap was abnormal again and this time the hpv was "high risk". I agree that these tests are often unreliable. So, if you can get a 2nd test to confirm your negative status, you'll feel a lot more comfortable. If it was wrong, than the sooner you find out, the better.

Hey newhere... I am in the same situation.. just got my results today ... hpv negative and abnormal pap and I ve been told to do another pap in one year but i still want a second opinion.. I might want to do a colposcopy AND another pap since I just changed the insurance. My actual ginec doesn t think I should do anything for the next year and I dont know if the new doctor will agree with me to do a colposcopy and also don t know if the insurance will cover the colposcopy as long as it is not hpv with high risk.. I read about it and looks like some of the companies are not willing to pay for colposcopy as long as the doctor thinks you don t need it... SUX Get a second opinion and if everything comes the same way like now it means you are fine and just do what the ginec tells you...

OH BTW I AM NOT WAITING ONE YEAR OR NOT EVEN 6 MONTHS TO SEE A SECOND DOCTOR. I AM GOING AGAIN IN 3 WEEKS OR SO .. THE SOONER THE BETTER I THINK .. WE NEED TO STOP THINKING ABOUT CANCER AND EVERYTHING THAT S BAD .. IF WE DON T WANT TO GET SICK WITH OTHER THINGS...
