I have read a few articles on hpv and oral cancer, from what I gathered from the articles it is kinda of up the air on if can be spread that way or not. I know you don't want to ask your Dr but that really is your safest bet.

It can be passed thru saliva if its in your throate,
Maybe you should just get it checked out
You don't have to say why
Just say you want to make sure that it hasn't spread and that your healthy

HPV is not spread through saliva, but rather by skin to skin contact and yes you can get HPV in your mouth through oral sex.

You said the procedures you had were almost a year ago and that it was removed. I certainly hope you have continued with follow ups during this past year which should have been every 3 months. If not, you need to get another Pap to determine if the dysplasia has returned. Removing the dysplasia caused by the HPV does not erradicate the HPV and it can return in the same or other areas.

thanks, dragonfly, for clarifying how hpv is transmitted during oral sex (via skin to skin contact and not via saliva).

and, stang_girl, it's not up in the air......there's no question that some oral cancers are hpv related. you can get more information at the oral cancer foundation's website explaining how the same hpv strain that can cause cervical cancer can also cause some oral cancers.

there are risks for both men and women for hpv related oral and anal cancers.

RE Dragonfly's comment about follow-up: it's definitely important because my doctors have said that if your tests come up HPV negative, then you won't be shedding any virus. So if you get a follow-up test and it's negative then you should be fine having oral sex with the same partner you've been with.

The thing that would really help everyone out would be a test for oral / throat HPV! The importance of HPV testing beyond the cervix has come up in a lot of posts this week but the technology seems to be lagging or else labs just haven't gotten into this line of tests yet.

Hello ALL...I thought I had the laser thing but when I went back for my two week check last thursday my doc informed me that there wasn't anything to laser (pre-cancerous cells). Something about it must have come out on the biopsy. This sounds like good news after weeks of worry but I'm confused. She wants to see me in three months. Still hpv pos (CIN 2) she says that won't change. So now I worry if i'll develop cancer a little later. Woo Hoo! I'm still mad/sad about having this hpv. Now I need to ask for the anal & oral test. Lucky me.

crybaby, having an hpv positive test result and have an abnormal pap or biopsy showing CIN2 are two different things. CIN2 means that you have moderate dysplasia. and, in time, your hpv test should become negative. i would encourage you to continue to learn more about hpv and cervical dysplasia/cancer. knowledge is power!

When I was first dx with cervical cancer, I also had HPV tests done which by the way came back positive. Now a few years later, I have tested negative for it. I have read that there are a lot of times that your body can rid itself of HPV.

Kyhunny,

You're right, there are chances your body will clear the infection if one have a health life style. That's why it's so important for us to be on top of our health and try to have our immune system at its best.

Take care,

Su
