I have had 5 abnormal paps in a row and different drs in my life. In september i was diagnosed with endo and was told to get a pap smear asap because my cervix was abnormal. Went and got one done at a clinic because i have no health insurance and was told last week that i have abnormal a typical cells and they want to see me back there in a year for another pap-smear. I am searching around for another doctor because my friend told me they should have seen me back in three months for another pap smear and do a biopsy if it was still abnormal. I guess i just wanted some feedback to see if waiting a yr is true or if i should seek a second opionion. Any feedback would be great. Thanks in advance :)

Your doctor is suggesting you wait a year for another pap test? After five abnormal ones? That sounds crazy.
Even after just one abnormal pap, doctors will often ask someone to come back in 6 months for a follow-up. Did they do an HPV test? It's time for your doctor (hopefully a new doctor!) to take the next step. It may be low grade dysplasia that will clear up on it's own, but there's also the chance it might not. Even without insurance, you must "qualify" for follow up treatment like colposcopy/biopsy. Are there any good clinics or womens centers nearby? Good luck!

jnc, it sounds like you need to find a way to get consistent medical care. having 5 abnormal paps in a row indicates a problem of some sort....i'm not sure the timespan this covered, but definitely should be followed. if you don't have insurance, check out coverageforall.org to see what options you might have. you may also want to check out county clinics, planned parenthood, and other clinics that may be able to see you on a cost reduced basis. if you can, try to find out what the abnormal paps indicated (more specifically than just 'abnormal').

Hi..
Just wanted to share something with you that may or may not be true..according to my oncol/gyn.

I had CINIII and was treated with CO2 laser. My first post op came back normal. Yippee! However, that was the last one in over a year. I was still going every 3 months. He does the colposcopy each and everytime I am there for a pap. He says everything looks really healthy. Yet, I'm still coming back abnormal. Of the lowest grade mind you.

Anyway, he feels that possibly my new normal is the slightly abnormal I have consistently had for a over a year. He said it is not unheard of for this to occur after having a surgical procedure done to the cervix.
Instead of going quarterly like I had been going, he's suggesting 6 months.

I feel that I am in the hands of a highly skilled and well respected oncologist. I personally have never heard of this abnormal possibly be a new normal, but the nurses have even assured me that it does happen.

Has anyone else heard of this?

Thanks for all your advice. I went to that website you requested and emailed the director to one of the programs and am awaiting a call back. I was seen at a clinic and the guy who does the pap smears makes me feel extreamly uncomfortable and acts like my problems are all in my head. They did do a hpv test and it came back as inconclusive. I am sending requests for release of my medical records to see what the exact tests say. I remeber when i was 18 i had an abnormal test and got a call insisting i come in for a repeat test imediatly but at that point i had already moved out of state. And of course being a teenager i didnt think to much of it. So thanks guys for the input :)
