Leep procedure

0 Recommendations

Hello,
Just got back the news today that my colpscopy came back high grade and now I need to have the Leep biopsy next week. I am not looking forward to this at all as the colposcopy was bad enough. I actually not at all worried about the high grade and cancer scare etc but rather the fertility aspect. I am 35 and have recently decided that I want to go ahead and try for a baby on my own, have my referal to the ferility clinic and was hoping to go in Feb 2010 so I want to know if there is anyone out there who has had the procedure and still was able to get pregnant and have a baby without having troubles with the cervix after. I heard there is risk of having a weak cervix after that would require a stitch to keep from having the baby which in turn could lead to bed rest...I am just frustrated and a bit scared right now, obviously want to get this taken care of asap because i don't want it turn into cancer or anything but i don't want it to hinder my chances of having a baby.

I haven't had my LEEP done yet and I'm not trying to get pregnant right now. But here are some things my GYN told me. He said that there are so many contradicting studies out there that it's hard to say whether or not it's proven that a LEEP can cause pregnancy issues. There are also other factors that go into this. It depends on how many times you have had different procedures, how much of the cervix they shave off, etc. My GYN said that when I start planning for a family I just need to inform my doctor of having a LEEP done so that they can monitor me a little more carefully.

Hope this info helps a bit! Sending good thoughts your way!

Hi Singlegirl,

I had my leep done last month and I asked my doctor about these things as well, even though I'm not ready to get pregnant as yet. She told me that it really depends on how high up the cervix the cut has to be. In my case it was my first leep and she only took off from the very lowest point of the cervix. She said that won't affect my ability to hold a pregnancy at all.
Sparkles is right, I think it really depends on how many times you have to have a leep and how much cervix they end up taking out.
But definitely talk to your doctor and make sure he knows that you want to get pregnant. Get lots of info about the procedure, my doctor even showed me a whole diagram about the cervix and what she was planning to take out, and then afterwards showed me again so I could see how much she cut.
That really helped a lot in terms of understanding exactly what was done.
Also, if you managed the colposcopy, the leep isn't really any worse. There's just a yucky smell during the procedure, and it takes longer than a colposcopy because you have a short wait period while the anaesthetic works. My recovery was also really fast and painless. Actually, it's only been 3 weeks and I've been back to my usual routine (including yoga, although not as intensely) for almost 2 weeks.
I also seem to recall some other ladies on this site who have gotten pregnant after the leep, so read some of the posts and maybe you will find their stories. A lot of their experiences have been very reassuring for me.
Good luck with everything!!!
Hugs!!!
:)

Thanks ladies for your support and information! I will definitely do some more reading and asking questions of my doctor, she told me that before she does the procedure she will go over it again and show me a diagram as well. I have already mentioned that having a baby was in my near future plans so I hope she doesn't have to take too much, this will be my first and hopefully last LEEP. I wish I could just get it over with but I guess just over a week isn't so bad too wait.
