Laser Treatment for Abnormal Cells

0 Recommendations

So thankful to have found this forum!
My doctor is recommending laser treatment for abnormal HPV infected cells inside my cervix AND outside around the perineum (twilight anaesthesia). I forgot what the doctor said but she said I have only 'low/mild' risk of getting cancer.
Have you had laser treatment? What is involved in laser therapy? What should I know/ask the doctor? What is recovery like (sex life)? Miss work? Did you need a laxative to help with BMs-I would imagine it could be painful.
Thank you, thank you!!!!

I hate to hear anybody has to deal with this type of thing.

I have HGSIL/cin2/moderate dysplasia. I am scheduled to have a cold knife cone tomorrow (which uses a scalpel). I was a nervous wreck until I started looking it up on the internet. I also wound up with a 2 page list of questions for the doc at my pre-op visit. I know for my procedure, it will be done at the hospital and I will be put under with general anesthesia. For most of these procedures, I've read there is one type of discharge or another to deal with for a period of time after. I have been told no sex (or swimming or tampons) for 6 weeks after. I have read sex after 6 weeks can be uncomfortable or painful, and trigger bleeding. I don't have to worry about missing work (because I'm laid off - I work in construction), but the doc gave me a paper with instructions about work excuses. I guess women miss a couple days of work for my procedure. I don't know about the other procedures. I have read that appointments are closer together for awhile after these procedures, though the frequency varies from doc to doc. Somewhere, I read you may need a stool softener or laxative after procedure.

Some questions I asked my doc:
Was I tested for HPV? If so, what strain?
What is the name of this procedure?
How common is it?
How long does it take?
How soon will the results be back? (with laser there may not be any results, though)
Are there any other options?
Will this require sutures or cauterization?
Will scar tissue cause any problems in the future?
Will this affect my periods?

There are many women on here who recommend getting a copy of your medical records from the doc. I agree. I haven't asked for mine yet, but I will soon.

I hope this has helped at least a little. Maybe at least given you some questions to ask your doc. Good luck!

Wow, someone to talk to. I'm crying right now sitting at my desk at work. I'm 36 married with six children. I had the laser thing done last friday 4/24/09. I am still spotting and having light cramps. I am so scared. I had not told anyone but my husband. After I got home I called three of my closest friends and told them. It felt like I was telling them I had AIDS or something. It felt really weird, they started asking all sorts of questions. One friend asked if it was from having too much sex. Because she knows I'm high natured and my husband and I have sex almost everyday. (We've been together since I was 19 with three kids already)I guess I've had HPV for sometime, they say dysplasia can develop from having sex before 18 and/or having kids before 16 both of which I did. Now 36 with 17,13,11 year old daughters and 20,19,5 years old sons. I pray for ALL women going through this. God will not fail US. Keep praying for yourself and others. I can't wait until my two week appointment. I just want this to be over. I'm crying again and I know this won't help. But it feels really good to say what I needed to. Thanks for your e-ear!--crybaby

hi,
just wanted to find out how you are doing after the laser surgery. It is now 4 weeks since i had it done, and i am still spotting, sometimes quite a lot. When did you stop?
thanks
help!

Hey Sweetbleu! I had the Gold Cervical Laser procedure done. I was diagnosed with CIN III, sever dysplasia, and because of the fact that the dysplasia was all around the cervix, the laser procedure was recommended by my doctor over the leep procedure. I had the laser procedure done in December. I checked into the hospital and was put under general anesthesia. The procedure went well. As for afterwards, I felt more cramping with the biopsies (3 separate ones) than the actual procedure.
The worst part was waking up after the surgery in the hospital. I felt a great amount of pressure in the my lower stomach area, but i requested some pain medication and they administered it and i felt much better. It took about an hour after waking up to feel well enough to leave the hospital. Don't leave unless you feel well enough to stand! I slept for about 2 or 3 hours at home and that evening I was a tiny bit sore but the next day I was back to normal.

My experience was great. I deal with a lot of anxiety when it comes to going under the knife.

I wish you the best of luck! If you need anything or have more questions, I'd be happy to help if I can.
