I need help sorting through this

Good day all :)

Ok...a quick run down for those of you who are not familiar with my history.

1. had pap

2. came back not so good

3. had colposcopy

4. lab results showed CIN III

5. Gyn suggests suggests total hysterectomy assures me time and time again it's not cancer.

6. 2 weeks later I have the hysterectomy.

7. lab results on cervix show invasive cervical cancer.

8. Gyn says...no big deal and sends me to oncologist.

9. Oncologist is very pissed at original Gyn because he did not follow standard procedure and give me a cone biopsy and now has to estimate the stage of the cancer. Either stage 1a or 1b. Can't determine if there was lymph node involvement or not because wrong hysterectomy was performed for person having stage 1a or 1b cervical cancer. Can't go back in and take lymph nodes for dissection.

10. I did 7 weeks of external radiation

11. Next 5 paps come back good. All scans, xrays etc. come back good.

12. 1 and 1/2 years later, 6th pap smear comes back as "ASC–H—atypical squamous cells cannot exclude a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion."

Gyn Oncologist and Rad Oncologist think this could just be from the damage the radiation did to me and that it will clear up on its own. They did say there is always the chance that it is precancerous, but their instincts are telling them no. I'm going back for another pap in 2 months. If it comes back with the same results we are then looking at other tests.

I zoned out at that point. Kinda decided to take a brain vacation as I was on overload. I should have had my husband go with me, but I didn't. I'm going to call Oncology Nurse and ask her, but do you guys/gals know what tests would then be performed? If these tests were to show precancerous cells, do you happen to know what comes next for me? Like I said, I zoned out and didn't ask the doc.

Thanks for your patience and help. You are all my heros!

hi, tavy. so sorry to hear you didn't get a normal pap....corellin might know more about this, but i think if they do an hpv test, then you can know whether this is indeed dysplasia or whether it's 'something else'. are they not recommending a colposcopy? particularly if the hpv test is positive, i would think you'd want to go forward with a colposcopy rather than just a repeat pap? and, that would be a way to also determine if you might be having vaginal atrophy or other radiation effects on the vaginal tissues. if you have mild dysplasia, they'll probably do nothing other than watch and wait, but if it's moderate or severe vaginal dysplasia, then they'll usually use laser to remove the abnormal tissue. again, i'm really sorry you're going through this, and i hope you're soon able to get a definitive diagnosis....sometimes the not knowing is as scary or scarier (and more filled with anxiety) than the knowing. hope this info helps. sending gentle hugs as you deal with it all......

Thanks so much! I'm going to actually print your response and have my doc take a look at it.

Be blessed,

Tavy

Hi Tavy - I'd call the onc nurse and ask - I think since you've already been treated for cancer they would treat the abnormal pap a little differently if you haven't been treated. I would think that if it continues to be abnormal they would do a biopsy/scan/eau.

Hope that you get clarification from your doctor and that this is just radiation damage.
