Hysterectomy--keep the ovaries???

0 Recommendations

My mother is in her mid 60's and is having a hysterectomy soon (she doesn't have cancer) but has some fibroids and it's reccomended. They asked her if she wants to keep her ovaries.

She's obviously well past menopause, does she have use to keep the ovaries? Anyone know more about this? She said, "If I get them removed, I wouldn't have to worry about ovarian cancer".---not that she's at risk for it. ???

I'm 56 and recently had a hysterectomy. My GYN told me my ovaries looked healthy so she just left them in. That made sense to me.

even after menopause, the ovaries continue to produce hormones. if the ovaries are healthy, and if she's not at high risk for ovarian cancer, why remove the healthy organs?

I had a totally hysterectomy when I was 45 because of cervical cancer. I told the doctor to take the ovaries. I didn't have to worry about getting ovarian cancer, which is so hard to diagnose. For me, it was the right decision I think.

Ovarian cancer is rare. If ovaries are healthy, I'd opt to retain them. It would be like cutting off the testes of a male, just in case there may be cancer one day, something you don't usually see done to males, and something that really shouldn't be done as frequently as it is done to women. Also, there are other options for treating fibroids than hysterectomy, which is major surgery.
