well it all depends on how healthy you are but all women are different and HPV can effect us all defferently no one can tell you what will happen to you in the future and i hope your paps will be normal as long as possible ....some women have hpv and dont get big problems and some women have everything go wrong so just talk to your doctor about your health and what ever pre-cotions you can take to stay healthy i wish you luck

hello, omin. well, hopefully it's 'just' that you have an active hpv infection. and yeah for you and your doctor for having the hpv test done! keep in mind that 80% of women will have an active hpv infection by the time they're 50 years old, so you're in the majority of women with that statistic. hopefully your body will clear the infection and no dysplasia will develop. again, that's the case for the vast majority of women. most women don't even realize they've had an hpv infection! i would encourage you to learn more about hpv - knowledge is power! and, do whatever you can to help clear the active hpv infection (no smoking, eating healthy foods including cruciferous vegetables or taking DIM supplements, getting plenty of sleep, avoiding vaginal infection/inflammation, using condoms - even if in monogomous relationship, at least til the hpv infection is cleared, reducing stress, etc.). hopefully you won't have to wait long for your biopsy results. let us know how you're doing.

thank you soooooooooo much your replys are allways helpfull and i appreciate that,,,i wish and pray for all the good newses for all of us.

FInd out from your gynocolgist which types of HPV you have. There are certain ones that cause the majority of all cervical cancers. Your gynocologist should be able to answer or find the answers through testing to determine exactly what virus you are dealing with. If it is a high risk one, please stay on top of your pap tests and remember that cancer can be prevented by a hysterectomy.

Hi omin -- it's great that your doctor is following you closely and staying on top of your HPV infection. The biggest determinent of whether an HPV infection will progress is the type. Type 16 is more likely to persist or progress than others. Unfortunately, the FDA has not yet approved a type-specific test, but there are some non-FDA approved tests available which some GYN's are willing to order. Attached is a link to the test used by my GYN most recently.

hopeandprayers, there's lots of much less invasive ways to prevent cervical cancer than having a hysterectomy! in addition to regular monitoring via pap and hpv testing, leeps and conizations can be very curative if cervical dysplasia should develop.

thanks for posting that information, corellin! (and, how are you doing? may i ask if you got your hpv typed, and whether it's the same strain again or a new one? hope you are doing well!)

Dear Flowershop lady, You are exactly right. I had cryosurgery, a leep, a cone all done. It's to bad my gyno. didn't test me and say look you have the HPV virus that causes cancer. This went on and off for me for 20 yrs. I trusted my doctor and really never knew much about cervical cancer. I would be fine for 5 or 6 yrs. then something would come up. My gyno. just kept prescribing birth control pills and acted like everything was wonderful. If I would've known this could have all been prevented by a hysterectomy, I would've jogged to the hospital and begged for one!

hopeandprayers, the hpv test has only been around for 5 years or so, but doctors have known about the link between hpv and cervical cancer for at least 15 years. my doctors told me about it, i had the brochure from the american cancer society that explained it, and of course, they didn't know as much as they do now with all the ongoing research.

i'm not sure about the specifics of your history, but if the doctor was negligent in your treatment, have you thought about pursuing legal actions?

hopeandprayers, i'm really sorry for all you've been through. were all your paps normal between 2001 and 2008? and did they do hpv testing during that time? and what did they do for the abnormal pap in 2001? was that treatment successful? those would be things to consider before you took legal action.

Hi hopeandprayers,

Thank you for sharing your history. I am also curious about what happened between 2001 & 2008. It's really helpful for those of us managing our HPV infections to know what can happen. I really don't think we have the full story from doctors or researchers because their understanding is limited. I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's infidelity and the repeated issues with abnormal paps & procedures. I hope you're doing well...

flowershoplady -- I'm on my last day of vacation and will hopefully find out the results of my biopsies & type-specific HPV test within the next few days. Other than the HPV, I'm doing great. Vacation was wonderful.

dear friends, the hpv test, showed high risk hpv,,is this enough to know about the type or should i go for specific number ,i mean is there any test that give me just a type, becuase my test result said HPV DNA(HIGH RISK) HIGH RISK DETECTED, high risk hpv types 16,18,31,33,35,39,45,51,52,56,58,59,or 68 and some more .and tody i was at my primery doctor and he recommend Gardisel vaccine,,and my gynocologist recomened the vaccine to,what do you think about the vaccin?
and is this possible that some one like me,who have hpv high risk type, get wrats also?i konw it's related with lowrisk but i'm worry about .thank you so much for advices,

omin, corellin posted this link on another discussion thread:
http://www.gynecor.com/GLOBAL/Services/Laboratory-Services/HPV-Genotyping.a spx
this would allow your hpv to be typed so that you know which strain(s) you have as active infections.

and, the gardasil vaccine will protect you against future exposures, if you don't already have the strains that it protects against.

if you have a low risk strain of hpv, then you could get genital warts. many women have multiple strains of hpv. and the hpv test that shows positive now is just showing the strains that are currently 'active'.

hope that helps!

To Flowershoplady & Corellin, In 2001 they did cryosurgery. After that I went to having paps every 6 months for 2 yrs. Then after that until I was diagnosed with cancer I had paps done on a yearly basis. I had no problems after 2001 until 2008.

hopeandprayers, PLEASE ADVISE! My Gyn told me that it would not be possible to test what strain/type of HPV I had unless they sent off my test to some other lab (?) My report from Quest Diagnostics lab states that a high risk HPV was detected and then just blanketly lists the HPV#s affiliated with cervical cancer or its precursors...

Luckily, it seems this is all I'm dealing with at the present time (the HPV infection)...my biopsy and ECC results came back benign...I have a f/u pap in 6 mths...Where else should I go from here?

Princess Red, I was never really tested for HPV. I do know that HPV 16 & HPV 18 cause about 80% of all cervical cancers. I asked my oncon. after my treatment if he knew exactly what virus it was and he said he suspected it was HPV 16. It is more common in squamous cell. HPV 18 is more common in adenocarcinoma. All I know is if you have a report that lists you have a high risk HPV, those are the ones that can cause cervical cancer.
