having first LEEP a week from today

0 Recommendations

I had my first colposcopy last week and my doctor wanted to schedule the conization right away, so that made me very nervous. I initially told him I would be fine with doing the in-office procedure with local anesthesia, but after talking to lots of people on this site, as well as a doctor I work with, I changed my mind, called today and had it rescheduled for general anesthesia. I am not a nervous person but with each passing day I get more anxious about this so I think being put to sleep is a good idea. I am 25 years old and have a daughter, but really want to have more kids in the future, and I think that's the main source of my anxiety. I'm pretty surprised that my doctor didn't tell me all the details that you guys seem to know about your biopsy results...he just told me "moderate changes, extensive dysplasia, higher grade than we expected to find..." No levels or classifications like you guys are talking about. I think I will call back tomorrow and ask about that because I feel very uneducated.
My main concern is returning to work 5 days after the procedure. I'm doing it on a Monday and returning to work on a Friday...but I don't have an "easy" or "desk" job; I'm a nurse and have to do lots of physical work with patients. I told my boss I would have to take it easy and I know my co-workers will pitch in to help me, but I know myself and I know I will have trouble putting limitation on myself unless I feel pain right then, right there. Will my body give me signals if I'm over-doing it?

Hi,
I had my LEEP done 11/13/08. It was really nothing.......I worked myself up........twice (the first time I was in the stirrups ready to go but the doc felt I had a slight infection so we cancelled it). The cervix doesn't have alot of nerves so there's really no pain. They numb the area with a mixture of novocaine and something else she told me but I forgot. The actual procedure was over in 10-15 mins. Waiting for the doc and their preparation took the longest. I went shopping right afterwards and then out to eat. The next day I went to work and did everything I normally do. I was told by the doc no baths, no sex, no tampons, no douching and NO working out at the gym until she sees me in a month. She told me that if the "healing plug" should let go before it's completely healed that I would bleed like a fire hose.............I definately don't want that to happen so I'll listen to the doc!! The worse part now is the discharge and it looks like from those who've had this before..........I'm going to have to live with it for a couple of weeks........augh.

I am having the outpatient procedure with anesthesia on Monday AM, but my doctor hasn't ordered any pre-op labs or other tests...i just had the positive biopsy and we scheduled the procedure...will he do them when i arrive in pre-op? Is that why they need 2 hours to prep? Curious.

Hi ArkansasRNMom, I just had my second colposcopy with punch biopsy and EEC.... I was told before leaving the office that this will determine what further treatment we need to take. I've already had the leep in Feb 2008 and even thought I had clean margins I failed my nex 2 paps so I'm back at the starting line. You should have NO problems going back to work 5 days after the procedure. You will be up and around the next day and the only limitations will be no lifting anything heavy. My doctor has also been very vauge about the results of any of my tests or procedures other than I have a high-risk strand of hpv. I would love to get a second opinion - which I might depending upon what I am told on the 24th from my punch biopsy. Going under is a great decision - it will be over faster than you can imagine and after spending the remainder of the day laying low you should be fine. Try to not worry to much over this... it's so common and the leep has high sucess rates! Good luck and keep us posted!!

HI ArkansasRNMom -- I'd suggest getting a copy of your medical records. I'm surprised the doctor recommended a cone right away after the colposcopy, because I'm assuming he wouldn't have gotten back any of the results yet from any biopsies. So how could he know what you'd need? A cone is usually recommended when abnormal cells are higher in the cervical canal, and so I'm wondering how that was diagnosed -- endocervical curettage? Anyway - would be great to get your records and see your specific diagnoses. Then you can read up on the recommended protocols and know your options prior to your procedure. And, no, your body won't necessarily give you signals right away if you're "overdoing it." You could possibly set off some bleeding (more than you might have otherwise), and that might be the first indication of overdoing it. It's possible then to still heal, but may take longer to fully heal in the long run.
