"HPV Vaccine Fails to Get Nod for Routine Use in Boys"

Although the FDA has approved the vaccine for use in boys, this federal advisory panel has deemed it an optional vaccine that's not recommended for routine use -- meaning it's less likely to be reimbursed by insurance companies.

Grrrrr. NOT good news. (But...thanks for sharing, Corellin!). One step forward, and at least one back again.

if boys receive the vaccine and come in contact with the virus they won't get any hpv related diseases but i've been wondering if they can still pass the virus on through sex to a female who has not been vaccinated? anybody know?

if they can't pass the virus on after being vaccinated then shouldn't the virus be 'routine' in boys to prevent a potential infection in females?????? herd immunity

i understand complete abstinence only prevents hpv transmission but the spread of this virus needs to be slowed down!

i don't get this crap? us females are bearing the burden of most hpv related diseases. did the fda think of that??

tam, if the boys/men are vaccinated, they wouldn't get hpv infections from the strains the vaccine protects against, and thus couldn't pass it on to someone else. yes, vaccinating boys thus helps to protect women. i think until that's seen as the main focus, it won't become routine. right now, they're focusing on the reason boys/men should be vaccinated is to protect them from the hpv strains that can potentially cause genital warts. i think the focus needs to shift to protect against the strains of hpv that can potentially cause hpv related cancers (cervical, vaginal, anal, oral - head/neck, lung, etc.).

So....basically we already know that girls aren't getting vaccinated in the numbers that will drastically reduce CC and pre-cancer AND NOW it is not for routine use in boys! What the hell!?!? This makes me so mad and this is why I'm so sick of hearing that CC is "100% preventable".....and NOT ENOUGH RESEARCH ON TREATMENT. There will still be CC and women need better treatment options for this disease.

oh shoot, reread my post and i meant shouldn't the vaccine be routine instead of 'virus.' the virus is routine enough, huh?

yep, we knew what you meant. ;)
