Frustrated~

0 Recommendations

In May of 2009 I went for my regular pap test. The DR as usual said that if I didn't hear back from her, then all was fine!
In July, I felt a couple of bumps on my cervix. (yes, I can feel my cervix!) About a month later, they were gone. At the beginning of October 2009, I felt them again and that menstrual cycle was very short.
So, I made a Dr's appointment for Nov 9th. 2009. Strangely enough, I got a phone call on October 20th from the Dr. leaving me a message saying that I had some "moderately" abnormal test results and that I should make an appointment to see her asap. I called her office the next day, to find out she had gone on holidays! I am very frustrated that after demanding to speak with another Dr. in the same office, noone would tell me what the term "moderately abnormal" meant.
The best they would do was get me in on Oct. 29, 2009, which is today. So, 10 am today, I get a phone call saying the dr is sick and not in, and can't get me in again until Nov 5th. Needless to say, the anxiety build up is starting to get more than frustrating.
Very upset, I called a couple of Dr's offices trying to get in soon, as they can download my results from one office to another if I instruct them to do so.

Anyways, the original Dr's office has now called and have said I can get in Oct 30th, between 10 and 11 am.

My main concerns are 1. Why has it taken so long for the Dr to get back to me about an abnormal test result, since my test was done in May of 2009, and she has only this month gotten back to me. and 2. What exactly does a "moderately" abnormal test result mean, especially considering I can feel a couple of hard bumps on my cervix.???

if you were in the u.s., you can simply ask for a copy of your test results....i'm not sure if that's the same in canada.....but ask.....surely you should be able to see your own medical records? it might, at least, provide you with more info....

Hi Seebash76 -- I have some bumps on my cervix also, which the doctor thought were nabothian cysts. So the bumps might not be related to HPV (although I still worry about mine, despite a thorough exam and the doctor's explanation).

I would ask your doctor for an explanation as to why the results weren't communicated sooner. Could they have missplaced them and forgotten to call you?

I will absolutely ask these questions.. And get a copy of my results!!!

So the results from the 2nd pap have determined atypical cells and I am scheduled for a colposcopy on Jan 13th. I am very nervous about this but trying to stay positive. I can still feel bumps on my cervix... Which I would assume to be HPV. After reading, I know that I should not assume this to be cancerous, but can't help but think that way. I assume that if the dr thought it to be more serious it would be treated that way. But, she says that abnormal paps are not abnormal and that very simply, the atypical cells will be dealt with now, hopefully before they have a chance to turn into cancerous cells.... Any thoughts?
Also, I was wondering, if it turns out to be cancerous, am I able to have a hysterectomy... will that remove the cervix also? and save the ovaries? Is this something that could just eliminate the risk altogether?

PS: the dr said that she could not feel or see any bumps... but I can feel them. I am seriously beginning to question this Dr.

Get a 2nd/3rd opinion! and a copy of your medical records if possible. My dr. kept telling me since 2007 that I had abnormal test results and just made me come back to retest every 3-6 mo. What i didn't realize was that he was monitoring the HPV and only told me that I had HPV when it became moderate/severe dysplasia. I know this now b/c I have a copy of my records. Get informed about your health and do not leave your life in the hands of the medical establishment. The person that cares the most about your welfare is YOU! not the dr. or nurses...

Yes, and thank you for your response Meliza4. I spoke to a few people about a 2nd opinion. Most importantly, a specialist. My thoughts are, what would be the point going to another family doctor. The only better opinion/2nd opinion would be from a specialist, of which you can't get in to see without a referral. So, due to complications during a first pregnancy, I had a long time contact with a specialist who happened to deliver both of my children. Of course, I hadn't spoken to him in 3 years, but he did my paps between 2004 and 2007. So, unless you are pregnant, you can't get in to see this specialist. Anyways, after leaving my information with his secretary, and asking her to pull my old file and leaving my number, he called me. The dr. said that the results from my pap by my family dr. are now referred to specialists at the Cross Cancer University Hospital. What better place to go to get a second opinion (Colposcopy/January 13th). The conversation with him was about 100 times more informative than my family dr. Just that added confidence and little bit more information from someone that I trusted is what I needed. Anyways, Thanks for all the info. and comments.!
