I am sorry, but I understood that radical hysterectomy means your uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, sometimes the upper part of your cervix canal and some lymph nodes will be removed. I guess you had a hysterectomy, but not radical.

A radical is not always ovary removal, I'm having a radical and keeping my ovaries. Depends on your age if they remove your ovaries or not, so you aren't thrown into surgical menopause.

A radical hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus, the tissue on both sides of the cervix, and the upper part of the vagina.

Removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries is a BSO, Bilateral Salpingo Oophorectomy, and can be performed with a total/radical hysterectomy.

I had a total hysterectomy, which was the removal of the entire uterus and the cervix.

Bubblyshaz, you may want to check out the HysterSisters website, it's just about hysterectomy's and you'll get lots of feedback on questions you may have!! Good luck!

Dear Fanx,

I hope you will find an answer to your questions soon. Maybe you could ask the nurses at the oncology dept.
SInce i live in Spain and at the time of my diagnosis and surgery spoke little Spanish, i got my info from Wikipedia. "Hysterectomy in the literal sense of the word means merely removal of the uterus, however other organs such as ovaries, fallopian tubes and the cervix are very frequently removed as part of the surgery.

* Radical hysterectomy : complete removal of the uterus, cervix, upper vagina, and parametrium. Indicated for cancer. Lymph nodes, ovaries and fallopian tubes are also usually removed in this situation.
* Total hysterectomy : Complete removal of the uterus and cervix.
* Subtotal hysterectomy : removal of the uterus, leaving the cervix in situ."

Doctors here don't say much, so this was my only source of information that is why I made a note earlier. Sorry if I was mistaken.
Anyway the doctors told me here that there is no sense to leave the ovaries bc the radiation will annul their function anyway.

Bubblyshaz, I am not sure how to answer this with out WAY too much info but here it goes. Maybe one of these may be the same as you. It has been a different journey.

First last year BEFORE my radical, I would see while filmy (almost paste like) when I would be intimate (thats when I would notice). The specialist said it might be my cervix trying to heal itself. I just put up with it...then after it was still there and well..radical hysto means no cervix so what is going on...?my oncologist would just say things looked good. But it still was there when I had sex. This is NEW!...

Second, It (thought same thing) got worse. I had no symptoms (no odor, no itching, not really a discharge) kinda clumpy ---if I douched it would come out alot! It ended up that I have had 4 yeast infections now since spring when I was on antibotics for over 2 months.

Two weeks ago when checking on my yeast infection the doc said I also have a bacterial infection, He gave me med. Both is gone now. But still have a lil white.

I have never had any type of discharge or anything ever so I have been upset. I asked about the white that is still there (i guess its a discharge but kinda stays put until something disrupts it). He really is not concerned and said that it could be how my body is now. He also said that i should only douche once a month that my body is not finding its natural balance with that and the hysto etc...I don't know but its annoying. I am glad I have just the one same friend through all this, it will be odd to have to explain that to someone new...'oh, don't pay that any attention...' I hate having yet one more change. Does any of this help??
