Hi Dorsetlass,

A LEEP is basically a thin wire loop that they cut out the bad cells. It has electricity flowing through to help stop the bleeding. I believe it is performed similar to colposcopy, and you are given local anesthetic.

You are lucky in being seen so quickly. I was diagnosed with a high grade polyp, and 11 weeks on, stil waiting for a colposcopy to see how far gone it is, and try to perform LEEP also.

Are you from the UK? I am. If you are, then you should get a box standard 'what is a LEEP', paper through with your appointment date. Hey, good luck. You're probably gonna worry - its normal. From what I've heard it doesn't hurt too much, but make sure you take it easy after.

Hi im from uk .. well i had cin111, had the leep under g/a my results came back still had more high up my cervical canal, my gyn thought a radical hyst would be the best choice, but i was still recovering from having a 12 pound ovarian cyst removed, so he thought i was not strong enough at the time to have another big operation, but i have since had two 6mth intervals colcoscopys both times have come back negative , i none the wiser as to why my gyn sugested a radical hysterectomy, i waiting for results from my last colcoscopy , can any ladies on here help in understanding this ..

dorsetlass - I was diagnosed CIN2 /moderate dysplasia from colposcopy. My doc did a procedure called a cold knife conization. It takes a larger, deeper sample than the LEEP/LLETZ. I would expect with the surface of your cervix coming back clear, but suspecting abnormal cells in canal would warrant a conization instead.

nwest68 - The surface of my cervix was CIN2, but deeper in my canal it was Carcinoma In-Situ. I had cancerous cells, but they haven't invaded. The cancerous cells were all the way to the point of the sample they removed (endo-cervical). They took a different, smaller sample (endo-cervical curettage) after they took the larger sample. The smaller sample came back clean.

On paper, it looks like they got it all. But my doc still advises a hysterectomy (just uterus and cervix). I told him I'd rather not do that. He gave me another option - pap smears and endo-cervical curettage every four months for a year, then six months for a couple years. The first one I went in for came back abnormal, so I had a colposcopy done. That came back mild dysplasia. He still is recommending the hysterectomy. He says if your body allows it to get to a certain point, it probably will get to that point again, or worse. Its also more difficult to test further up in you cervical canal, which is where my worst cells were. With the cervix and uterus removed, the chances of it coming back are significantly reduced, but you still have to get pap smears every year. I'm still holding out, waiting for my body to heal itself. A hysterectomy is a major surgery with its own complications!

I've seen it written a hundred times, and I totally agree - get copies of your medical records, ask questions, and take care of yourselves.

This all started in August when I went for my annual pap. I was diagnosed with CIN III cervical dysplasia, after having 2 paps, a colposcopy, and 2 LEEPS (one in the cervix, and the 2nd a Top LEEP...going up further in my cervical canal. I'm 58. I'm going to have a total hysterectomy on Dec 1, which will take care of everything. I want this to be all over with...so i can move on ...

I have CIN III and just underwent a LEEP Cone Biopsy on Monday(3 days ago). I was put under for this surgery as it is invasive and causes anxiety. I live in Canada and found out my results from the Colposcopy 1 1/2 weeks before I had to go in for the LEEP. It was done fairly quickly in the hospital. The actual surgery time was 7 minutes. The only thing I find I'm having is extreme uopper body muscle pain from the anaesthetic. I have light cramping like menstrual cramps and have had some weird discharge from the cauterization. I had no bleeding initially but have begun spotting today, but very lightly. No pain at all. I have to go back to the doctor in four weeks for the results of this biopsy. The reason for LEEP is to remove the abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix and to get a deeper cervical biopsy while hoping to cure it at the same time. I hope the best for you. I assure you it is scarier than it actually is.
