Confused hpv results

0 Recommendations

I recently turned 30 and went in to have my routine pap smear. The dotors office called and told me that my hpv test came back postive. I have never had any abnormal results on a pap. They told me I would have to come in for a colposcopy. I have scheduled but am very anxious. My question is why have they ordered this test is it routine when hpv comes back positive? Does this mean I have high risk hpv? Will the test hurt? please help im really nervous and scared.

It's very routine. Don't panic. I just went thorough this myself for the first time. Your doctor will just take a closer look to see if you have any abnormal appearing areas that need to be biopsied. Imagine a regular gyno exam plus a microscope. The colposcopy itself isn't any worse than a normal exam imho. If after applying a solution and looking at your cervix under different light your doctor might want to do a simple biopsy (which is common). I had to have one and though it was a tad uncomfortable it was fast. Given the colposcopy it's like that you have tested positive for a high risk hpv strain. Do you know anything more about the pap? How significant were the changes?Remember... Just because you have an abnormal pap dies not mean you necc have cervical cancer or will need any additional treatment.

Thank you for your response I actually went today for the test it really wasnt bad at all the dr. said he didnt see anything but sent cells for testing to be safe. I do have a strain of the high risk hpv. The dr. said I have to be diligent now about having my pap smears done every six months which I will.

I am sorry you have to go through this. It is very scary I was stressed out. I took some tylenol before i went and it wasnt bad at all. It has been a few hours since I came home and i'm having a little cramping nothing to bad. Good luck to you and I hope it turns out well.

They would not be ordering a colposcopy for low risk HPV. I hope when you had your colpo done that your doc took the time to visualize not just the cervix, but the vagina, vulva and perianal/anal area as well. HPV is not localized to the cervix only and this is the perfect opportunity to rule out any other HPV lesions.
