I am so glad that I have found this site having search the internet for women in a similar situation.
I discovered from my Pap smear last year that I had dysplasia at Cin lll ( I only found this out recently after asking to see my med records). I was then sent to the hopital for a Colposcopy shorlty after. However it turns out that I was never given a Colposcopy and that I was given yet another Pap smear - 2 in fact throughout the year - of which came back normal.
This took place while in Germany, and was told by my GP that smears are taken differently in Germany as opposed to the UK! and that's why they came back normal as they didn't show CIN lll! (why didn't my GP question any of this!!!) How wrong could they have been.
I hadn't been feeling well and took myself back to the doctors and inturn requested another smear. To my horror it came back with severe dysplasia (CIN lll)! I had a colposcopy within a week and have just had a cone biopsy (laser) under a general anasthetic.
I am so worried that having carried CIN lll for over 15mths, untreated, that my results from my Cone Biopsy will say Cancer. I am 34 and my husband and I want to start a family, but now and afraid that with the scaring I may not be able to.
Any advice would be truly welcomed :(

Dear cmp75,
I'm sorry you had this terrible experience with unreliable tests and delayed diagnosis. I'm glad you finally got the right treatment.
One thing to keep in mind is that you didn't necessarily have CIN III for over 15 months, I think, based on what you said. It may have progressed more slowly.
Now you can just wait and see what your cone biopsy results are. I had one done with a LEEP a year and a half ago, and my endocervical margins were focally positive (positive in some spots or flecks) for CIN II, but so far even with that initial bad news my follow up testing has been HPV negative and normal.
I've never tried to get pregnant but some people here may have suggestions on this after cone biopsy.
Hang in there. I hope your surgical results are good! In the meanwhile, you can take care of yourself the best you can -- quit smoking if you smoke and consider taking a Green Tea supplement (watch the caffeine though if you're trying to conceive) and / or Bioresponse DIM, which seems to be good at controlling levels of bad estrogen and fighting HPV (again, not for someone who's pregnant unless your doc says okay).

P.S. I realize now that you had the CIN III a year ago, but wasn't sure about the follow up paps. Also abnormal? Well hang in there and I hope you can get your surgery results soon and that they're good!

hello, cmp. i hope you are healing well and that the conization successfully removed all the dysplasia. do you know how long you have to wait for results? and, very frustrating to hear that the doctors didn't take the more appropriate action of a colposcopy and biopsies after the first hgsil pap, and then you had a false negative/normal pap after that! hopefully you're now with more reliable doctors! as for pregnancy after cervical conization, it's possible, and probable, and many woman have had successful pregnancies and discussed them on this message board. the risks are more from a thinner and less secure cervix rather from scarring - this can add risks for miscarriage, so you'll want to be sure that when you do plan your pregnancy, your ob/gyn knows about the surgery so he can monitor you...some women will have a 'stitch' put in place to keep the cervix closed. hope this helps....and let us know how you're doing!

Hi flowershoplady, I feel much relief hearing that other women have gone on to have successful pregnancies. I have just arrived back from the hospital after excessive bleeding from the cone biopsy. I was treated well and quickly (which is a bonus has i am treated in the German system via the Army, which is much quicker than the UK NHS system) its just a shame that the med centre,which is British were not as thorough!). Their advice now is bed rest for the next 24hrs and plenty of rest to follow.
I can at least follow with some great news. My results also came back today whilst at the hospital (so no need to wait for my GP). The results showed CIN 3, Carcinoma in situ (CIS) . I was told that it means that some of the cells look cancerous. But they are all contained within the skin covering the cervix. It is not a true cancer until the cells break through the top layer of skin covering the cervix and spread into the tissue underneath. If this happens, the cells can spread and then they will become a true cancer.
I have been told that all the cells were removed but was one step away from cancer - does anyone know what level that is on the cancer scale !!!
It can be a little difficult understanding my German Gyno but hopefully I have interpreted this correctly. I will of course go and see my GP and have this expained fully. I must say though, I have lost my faith in my med centre and feel they don't fully understand the nuts and bolts of gynae issues.
Still, relief is a wonderful thing and I still can't re-iterate enough that this site has kept me going through what can feel like a very lonely time, when waiting for results. :)

They say they were "one step away from cancer" because CIS is considered stage 0 cancer by some, and the last step of pre-cancer by others. While it's not exactly a good thing to have, that is great news that it was not invasive!

CMP: I just had a LEEP with the same test results as you. I'm so relieved. I'm sorry you had that experience with the messed up testing.
I am a little worried about the whole pregnancy after treatment thing as well, even if I'm not sure I want to have another child. My husband and I both have 1 from previous relationships. We'd like to have one together, but finances make this look less and less likely.
I was at risk for pre-term labor prior to the LEEP as I gave birth to my son 5 weeks early. My Dr. told me that I would be even more likely to have a premature birth after. So I'm guessing it would be about the same thing for a cone biopsy. You will probably be classified as a High Risk pregnancy and be closely monitored. Possibly with bed rest toward the end of your pregnancy.
I wish you the best, and I hope you can get pregnant and have an uneventful pregnancy.
