hi i have cin3. how long does it take to turn into cancer if i chose not to have hysterectomy?
I don't know if anyone really knows the answer to that. I can tell you that if the dysplasia is removed and the margins are clear (meaning that if they cut it out and the perimeters of what they take out is healthy tissue), it may not develop into more dysplasia.
Have you been able to reach your doctor for additional questions?
i would echo's chamomile's response....nobody really knows for sure how long it would take to progress....or if it would regress. have you spoken to your doctor about options other than hysterectomy?
i have cin3 too , i go for a hysterectomy next month. my dr, gave me the option to do nothing, get a freezing again or hysterectomy. his input was why would you take the chance, next step is cancer! so i am going through with the hysterectomy. i am terrified. but im not taking the chance.
A conization is much more substantial that simply freezing the outer layer (which I believe is the treatment for less severe dysplasia). There is no doubt that doctors' advice varies from person to person. It is the "old school" thinking to jump to a hysterectomy before trying more conservative methods of treatment.
Many women here will attest to the fact that the uterus serves a purpose other than just child-bearing. Unfortunately, the traditional view is that it does not and a hysterectomy is regarded as a quick fix when perhaps less invasive and severe treatments exist. I'm not saying that a hysterectomy is not necessary in all cases, b/c it most certainly can be. However, there ARE doctors who are more conservative in their approach and are beginning to understand that you don't necessarily have to cut it all out. Flowershoplady had a nice analogy which was something along lines of....if you have a pre-cancerous mole on your arm, you don't just cut off your arm at the first pass.
I'm not trying to scare anyone, but this is irreversible major surgery. CIN III is almost cancer, which is why you should be seeing a specialist .... which is a gyn/oncologist. It bugs me that there are ob/gyns that probably should refer their patients to specialists and do not. We need to be advocates for our own care, so that we can make the most informed decision possible.
i have made an appt. to see oncologist aug 27 for second chance. i think u should do same.but again its up to u. goo luck
thanks ladies for your replies. i already had the freezing once, then i had a cold knife cone. and he went deep. that is why he says hysterectomy next. i have always had problems with my periods. took 2 years of infertility to become pregnant. and finally did. my son has cerebralpalsy so i am done having children. i would rather a hysterectomy than chemo or radiation later on. both my parents passed away from cancer. i saw what they went through with cancer and chemo and radiation. so i think it is the best thing for me??????? i dont know what else they can do, my obgyn has been fighting the cells for 5 years .. but if you still think i am wrong please let me know so i can rethink this whole thing. i am confused and scared!
butterfly, please be sure to get a second opinion before this - and any - major surgery, and in this situation, it would be best to see a gynecologic oncologist. you may be able to have another conization rather than a hysterectomy with all its potential side effects, as well as major recovery. find out your options!
butterfly, second opinions never hurt....but it does sound like at least you've been attempting other treatments first and that it may be very persistant dysplasia. In the end it does have to be your own decision. If you know all your options and you're comfortable with you decision, that is what is most important. Good luck and keep us posted.
Some HPV virus's are "aggressive" and progress quickly. I went from a CIN1 to CIN3 in 6 mos. and even now, I'm not sure I don't have cancer. I had a hysterectomy and will get my pathology report in a couple of weeks. It's nothing to take lightly, I'm afraid....M
I assure you all that I wouldn't personally take a chance. I'd go for the hysterectomy. I know too many women who waited and had this or that procedure done thinking it would solve the problem, only to find that it got worse. Cancer isn't something to take lightly. It spreads quickly sometimes, and into other organs before you realize it. Then you are faced with a real serious life threatening problem. Get a second opinion from an oncolygist/gynocologist. Don't take a chance with your own life. It isn't worth it.
thanks to all you ladies for the advice. and thoughts, i will let you know how things go when i discuss all of this with my dr. i am to see him sept. 4th, take care, i visit this sight every day! god bless!
Hi Stalin,
I've read that generally speaking IF CIN III/CIS (squamous cell) progresses to invasive cancer, it takes approx 5 yrs - an overall 10 yrs from healthy to invasive cancer.
Keep in mind that NOT all women diagnosed w/CIN III/CIS progress to invasive cancer.
humm I had severe dysplasia too, My results were very bad,, the gyn told me that the next step was invasive cancer for me,,, So Instead of hysterectomy which was the next step I had conazation done,,, all came back free and clear,, that was 4 years ago,, but I have suffered awful periods and irregular bleeding after the surgery just had my pap wednesday and hoping for good results,,,,the choice is your,, If i had it to do over (since i already have my tubes tied) I would have probably had a hysterectomy,,
I don't think there is any way to predict how long it will take for it to turn into cancer. I am not taking any chances. I have the same condition as you and I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy on November 5. I have spoken to a number of people who had hysterectomies for a variety of reasons at young ages - all of them have told me it was the best thing that ever happened to them.
hi everyone very busy. just to let u know i will be having a pap done on oct 13. pl. keep me in your prayers. will keep u posted.
