Cancer Surgery Hysterectomy HPV Cervical dysplasia Cervical cancer
Sorry to hear you're dealing with cervical dysplasia. I know it can be scary. Why are you having a hysterectomy? Have you already had a LEEP or conization? A hysterectomy is major surgery and may not be needed. Have you had a second opinion? Always get a second opinion before major surgery!
Are you familiar with the standards provided by the ACOG (American College of OB/GYNS)? Here's a website where you can read the standards:
http://asccp.org/consensus/histological.shtml
And, here's a quote from the guidelines that hysterectomy is not to be the first step in treatment:
"Hysterectomy is unacceptable as primary
therapy for CIN 2,3."
This is not to negate your feelings.....just want to be sure you know your options. Lots of women here are dealing with HPV and cervical dysplasia as well as cervical cancer, and you've found a warm and supportive community. Keep learning about hpv and ways in which you can help your body clear the active hpv infection. Knowledge is power!
I also have CIN3, and I have had 2 Leep procedures. My doctor said he got it all the last time I had my Leep, but i will continue to go back to recheck appointments to make sure, and also to make sure it also does not grow back. I know this can all be a lot of work, and take time, but it is always worth it. We have to take care of our bodies.
I also think you should get a second opinion, just to make sure a hysterectomy is the best choice. I've learned so much after my diagnosis. I hope everything works out for you. Know that we are here for you!
I too am sry to hear that you are going through a scary time like this. I as well think that a second opinion is justified and needed as a hysterectomy is, as FSL said, very major surgery and is not typical treatment for CINlll.
I do wish you well.
many thankyous for your reply. now i am so worried and confused dont know where to turn or what to do. feel like the world is caving in. someone please help.
stalin, are you seeing a gynecologic oncologist? If you are not, you should see one for a second opinion right away. I had early invasive cancer and was still able to avoid a hysterectomy with multiple conizations. Conizations are used to diagnose AND to treat dysplasia and cancer. Please take your time, and it generally takes time for dysplasia to progress to cancer and even when it does, CC is regarded as a slow progressing cancer. You always have time to get second (and even third) opinions so that you are fully informed BEFORE having life-altering and irreversible surgery.
I'm glad that you found this site. The women here are very supportive and extremely knowledgeable. Keep us posted.
no i did not get a second opinion because i was not aware of such i thought that having the hysterectomy will for ever destroy the precancerous cell and that this will be the end of cin3. my doctor did not even spoke to me about conization. is lietz and conization same?
stalin, lletz is the same thing as leep. the lletz terminology is more commonly used in the uk than in the us. and conization is when a cone shaped portion of the cervix is removed, and it can be done via leep technology or via cold knife (scalpel).
as for what to do, where to turn.....if you like your gynecologist and trust him, perhaps you need to sit down and talk with him about why he's suggesting a hysterectomy without doing a leep or conization, and to discuss options with him. it concerns me that a doctor would jump to major surgery before doing a much less invasive surgery, but you need to do what feels right for you. maybe you just need a new gynecologist. another option is to talk with your internist. just because the surgery is scheduled doesn't mean it can't be un-scheduled!
let us know how you're doing!
many thks. i will do that as per tomorrow. thks alot.
stalin, i have cin 3 and am getting a hysterectomy next month. i am terrified. although i have had the freezing of my uterus and also later he gave me a cold knife cone. which ever you decide you are in our thoughts. and it is normal to be scared and angry and sad! i am all of those and more. please write again and let us know what you decide and how it goes. take care...
