Anyone have GI problems after trachelectomy?

0 Recommendations

Wondering if anyone has had any of these symptoms. My situation is very rare, but I thought I would ask anyway. I had a vaginal trachelectomy in January of '08, ten months ago. They took 34 lymph nodes from my abdomin to make sure they were clear, which they were. (This was an abdominal incision.) The trach went fine.

A few hours post surgery I had abdominal bleeding, they don't know why, maybe from the lymph nodes being removed. I had three blood transfusions after that. I recovered for a week in the hospital, and was feeling better until after another week when this abdominal fluid became infected- back in the hospital for a week with IV antibiotics. Since then I have been well, with normal paps, but still no period. However, I continue to get GI problems, feelings of heartburn, (which I've never gotten before), mild nausea, and just feeling like there are rocks in my gut. This was really bad a few months post surgery, and now it comes and goes with intensity. I don't know what it is- from the surgery itself, the abdominal bleeding, the infection, no period etc.

I don't want to scare anyone as this is very very rare, but wondering if anyone else has had any kind of GI problems as well.

have you had sex and ovulated and didn't realize and got yourself pregnant? the only time i ever had heartburn was when i was pregnant....

Hi Coolio,
I had a laproscopic radical trachelectomy in September, and yes, I have experienced quite a range of GI problems since then. Heartburn, nausea and constipation being the major ones. It also comes and goes. Some days I'll feel fine, and others I'll feel like I'm 10 pounds heavier than I am, all in my abdomen. I also have IBS so my doctors thought this might have something to do with the GI issues, but it's hard to tell. I also was experiencing some sharp pains in my abdomen for awhile, and then finally discovered I had a UTI. Antibiotics took care of it. I've had every period on time since my surgery. Everything is exactly the same (with fewer cramps, which is nice!) No problems at all. Does your doctor know that you have been missing yours? My doctors wanted to know right away if I missed my first one post-op. They said that in some cases the kind of "faux cervix" they create during surgery can basically close, preventing your period. I don't much about this, but my doctors told me to let them know right away if I miss a period. I think overall that GI problems are extremely common after any gynecological surgeries. I would definitely check in with your doc about it, if you haven't already. I hope you figure it out so you can get back to enjoying your cancer-free life! :)

Well that's comforting to know that it sounds fairly common. My situation is so unique they really don't know what to do, as it could be from multiple things. They are aware of the no period issue- they've put me on the pill many times to see if that will do it, but so far no luck. I see the doc every three months so I'll just keep working with her. It's just nice to know that others have the same symptoms. Thanks!
