Hi there. I just joined this group and I'm so thrilled to see all you out here willing to share your challenges. I had no idea such spaces existed and this is such a huge relief to me.
So I'm wondering if there's anyone here who lives around my area (Tallahassee, Florida) and would be interested in forming a playgroup with my son Jude and me. Jude is 8 years old, is diagnosed with a "mild" form of CP that mostly impacts his speech. He also has a chronic drool issue that we deal with by putting him in bandannas that he wears around his neck (he looks rather jaunty in them, I must say). Jude is more typical than not--that is, he doesn't have any sort of mental or behavioral difference, but his speech and the drooling make it hard for him to forge meaningful friendships with typical children. Which is doubly sad as Jude is such a loving, gregarious and friendly little boy. He really loves and accepts everyone. Perhaps he was born this way or perhaps the CP has made him develop his emotional intelligence. In either case, he's lovely and I'm certain a boy you would enjoy knowing.
Little background on me--I'm a Creative Writing professor at FSU and a poet (I know, that sounds ridiculous). Jude's dad and step dad are writers, too. For all the scribbling in his family, Jude has turned out to be something of a natural scientist and wants to be a paleontologist or marine biologist when he grows up. He adores Pokemon and any thing that puts him in touch with animals and nature. He's a big bird watcher as well.
If anyone here is interested in meeting up please contact me here. I'll look forward to hearing from you.
