Advice on Developmental Language Delays?

0 Recommendations

We have tried many videos, speech therapy, and now a preschool with speech therapy 5 days a week. We are seeing some improvements but wondering is anyone has some good ideas?!?!

Speech is not acquired in one day so I would advise you to keep doing what you're doing.

For the past 3 years I have utilized the TALKTOOLS Speech Therapy Program(talktools.com) and have had great success. They have several different programs designed for home use or in the therapeutic setting.

When I purchased our first program, my daughter was two years old and had NEVER uttered a word. She would babble constantly and point when she wanted something. After researching language development specific to CP, I found that strengthening her oral muscles was key to her language development, and the oral stimulation tools were helpful in this area.

Second, I worked closely with her teacher and the speech therapist so that we could model all of the communication lessons from school, at home. They were kind enough to loan us the communication devices(AAC device) and the speech therapist created picture boards for us to use as well. And we basically just set up her environment to model language, watched many videos, and of course PBS.

And one day in February she went to school and asked the teacher for milk and everyone was shocked, elated, overjoyed, that the window just opened up and the voice of this quiet little girl could now be heard. From that day forward, everyone worked extra hard to maximize her skills and this September she started Kindergarten reciting her ABC's, counting from 1-16 in english and spanish, recognizing colors and using simple 3-4 word sentences, and also answering simple questions.

This was VERY hard work that took years to accomplish, and still there is more work to be done. The key is patience-because it won't happen overnght, and finding what works best for your child and sticking with it.

Reading to a child every day is also critical. I wish you the best of luck.

I hope this was helpful.

high5techmom,

The correct domain for TalkTools is http://www.talktools.net/

I noticed the videos ranged from $88 to several hundred. Did you buy the DVDs or attend workshops? How many DVD did you buy and would recommend any particular ones?
