I am writing this journal entry because I need advice. If you have read any of my posts you know all that I have been through and all that is to come. I have never had good veins. Being so sick and in the hospital so much now I really have no veins. I was supposed to get a port months ago before my last surgery so I could get TPN, but I was stubborn and refused the port. To me having a port just meant that I was really sick, even though I really am. (I know it is just an odd quirk). Now that I have had my gastric pacer surgery and will not have to have IV TPN I saw no real reason to get a port.
Well, I have had 3 procedures in the past month and have another to come that required an IV catheter. I am always an unable and get stuck multiple times most of the time they are not successful sticks. Blood draws are just another form of torture...today I went in for a battery of blood test and went through 3 different nurses at 3 sticks a piece and they even attempted my feet---None of them were successful. So I have to go back Monday and let them try again. Yes, I was hydrated...I drank gatoraide and pedialyte since last night.
My whole point to this rambling is the question of should I get a port? I know that I am the only one who can really decide this, but I will take any words on this matter.
Can you see a well placed port to much under the skin if you are very skinny? Because I am. I also wanted to weigh the pros and cons of possible infection? My mom also doesn't want me to get it because she keeps saying that I just had my last surgery and I am only going to get better, but she is not the one getting tortured with so many sticks! I just don't know what to do??
Best wishes and good health,
Alicia
